  1. There's a 2 to 3 inch gap between thr grab-rail and the hatch cover. Heavy rain means an increased depth of flow through that gap, which is what seems to cause the ingress. Do others have any kind of seal?
  2. An ongoing problem this one, but only in heavy rain. I have a conventional two-door side hatch with hinged top cover. Water comes in at the top of the forward half of the doors in heavy rain. Venturing outside in these conditions I see that because of the downward slope to aft, the forward gap between the hatch cover and the grab rail is expected to deal with a greater flow of water that the aft gap. Should I a) look for a way of damming the flow and preventing the ingress into the cabin, or look for a means of increasing the flow overboard?
  3. The only answer! A folding shower screen is easy to install, and doesn't seem to have the same propensity to mould build-up if you give it a wipe with your towel after use.
  4. There's a big difference in price between a Travelsat package at £375 (dish, receiver and satellite locator) and a kit from Aldi at £50. Is it worth that difference? (NB - anyone who thinks satellite rceivers on boats are a waste of time need not clog the forum with replies to this posting)
  5. Turners, just on the left, on the other side of the bridge after descending the lock at Wheaton Aston, is by far the cheapest diesel around. Mind you, Norbury Junction is not that much dearer.
  6. And at 99p + £1 p&p it's hardly crime of the flippin century now is it?
  7. Your right to go past at speed ends when my wife is about to give herself an injection.
  8. Simple as this maybe? Potential new boat buyer wont risk buying new at the moment, for all sorts of reasons, (problems getting finance, fear of builder going bust etc) and therefore won't be selling his own boat any time soon. Result - shortage of buyers of new boats, and shortage of s/h boats in the market
  9. How much more comforatble would it be to be able to sit whilst steering, instead of standing on two or three square feet of chequer-plate for hours on end? Cruising is for pleasure, not for 'looking right' on a so-called trad stern. There's not much 'traditional' about a boat that, sure, has a rear deck that looks like they did in the olden days, but is crammed with comfortable beds and every electrical device known to man, up to and including a microwave! The old boaters would p*ss themselves! The most ridiculous sight I ever encountered on the canals was a boat & butty, lashed together, being steered by a bloke in the full fancy dress I imagine he wore every day - full beard, wescot, thich leather belt, trilby - you get the picture. All very convincing until I heard the bow-thruster kick in!
  10. Call that congested? Should see Cropredy in August! :-)
  11. Yeah - those 'rich' people who've worked hard all their lives, bettered themselves, (run a successful business maybe?), and who already by definition contribute more tax because of their higher earnings, really deserve to be stung, don't they? Never mind that they might become more reluctant to invest in new buisnesses, employing more people as a result. Let's sting 'em eh? Then try and get a loan!
  12. QUOTE (Hyperion 53 @ Apr 18 2009, 11:30 AM) Diesel 48.9 ppl at Norbury Wharf Limited Ditto - That matches the 76p I paid for a 60/40 split at Norbury on April 15, and two days earlier I had paid 83p for a 60/40 split at Nantwich Canal Centre - both make Stone Boat Builders at £1.15 for the same split, a week or so before, look positively greedy! And please don't tell me they are a small trader trying to scrape a living!
  13. I spotted NB Holly on the Middlewich Arm this afternoon!!!! Is it still missing? Is there a reward?
  14. I'm in the middle of the first trip out this year, and have been made to say ouch twice now, both times after buying diesel! I have paid the following: April 4th - Stone Boatbuilders - Trent & Mersey - 117p and 69p April 7th - Lyme View Marina - Macclesfield - 115p and 66p The price for propulsion is ridiculous compared to garage prices!! What are others currently paying?
  15. I've used one or two fuel additives periodically and they do reduce the smokiness temporarily. It's a very pale blue smoke and only happens (albeit in large amounts) after the engine has been idling for any period. It clears after 15-20 minutes, and is more of an embarrassment than anything. That said, the engine does consume a moderate amount of oil, which is obviously being burned - its an older engine with older technology I suppose.
  16. Anyone have experience of this product, and is there the remotest chance it will reduce the smokiness of my 17 year-old Lister LPWS4 without causing any detriment to said beast?
  17. Cheers for that - i'm now likely to be there tomorrow (Tuesday) but I have to leave on Friday anyway
  18. Planning to be at Bugsworth Basin later this week - is there anything on there or is it likely to be quiet?
  19. You're not a real boater until you've been cruising all day (as I was yesterday), you're tired, cold and hungry (as I was) and you eventually moor up in the middle of nowhere. Then when you get the veg on for dinner, the gas dies, and the only cause is a failed regulator! No hot grub then. Replaced it today, since we were passing Midland at Penkridge this afternoon, and all is now well.
  20. I'll be back at the boat next week and will have another look at these suggestions - cheers lads
  21. Shoreline!!!!! We've had their fridge/freezer for a couple of years now - typically uses around 24a/h over a 24 hr period
  22. Last summer I replaced the old two unit Techisol gas alarm system with a new single unit combined gas alarm and gas valve controller. Ever since then, operation of the ignition of the gas hob adjacent to the unit causes the alarm to trip out and require re-setting. The supplier has suggested running a seperate 12v supply to the gas alarm, but the fault persisted. The latest suggestion was to fit a capacitor across the supply of the alarm, but this failed to cure the problem, and I have to ignite the hob using a gas wand. Any ideas?
  23. Badge engineer or not, I've had no trouble at all in the four or five years I've had a Sterling 3000 inverter, advanced battery controller and power management panel. Speak as you find, you might say.
