  1. For safetys sake its a good idea to isolate all electrics (except bilge pumps) when your off the boat. A well positioned solar panel would be a more worthwhile method of keeping batts charged up

  3. Phill Ive got an open mind so can you detail the chemical/metalurgical events which are causing this to happen When my shell was being built this summer, I was annoyed to find the boat yard guys have an habit of drinking tea on the job and putting mugs down on steelwork. Where tea was dripped and mugs placed is now where my oxide primer is rusting and bubbling. What is my best plan for tackling the steel prep when better weather comes?
  4. With water turned off and everything else frozen up, your percieved sense of great efficiency must be due to all hands being in the office, probably to keep warm
  5. 220v led lighting is expensive, 220 low energy lamps are no brighter than 12v and batteries are always on charge anyway so to keep it simple, stick to 12v lighting. 220v lights are also bulkier because they make such a lot of heat

  11. Im trying to cast my mind back to a thread a while ago in which someone said that BW are your Landlords, in which case, they are obliged by law to provide sanitation and water

  17. When I had a Broads holiday one year, I saw 4 city kids turn up to hire a boat and the girls were trying to negociate boarding whilst wearing 5'' heels and hanging onto rucksac sized handbags with one hand and shoulder mounted ghetto blasters with the other hand. Therefore rules have to be in place to cater for people who are as impractical as this.

  19. Are these the inserts which concentrate the coal above the grate and stop it lodging on the sides?

  21. I think for 'standard' weight, you have to read worst case senario which in the case of light aircraft, bodies are assumed to be 90kg or 15 stones each for the weight and ballance calcs So, 6 bodies at 90k each, all stood on one side, must be able to be withstood and the vessel remain seaworthy, ..............so how much air do 6 people need?
  22. This is the one big question I have left to solve. How much and where The RCD stipulates the volume of free or advantitious air needed is directly proportionate to the number of persons which the vessel is designed for. That number is arrived at from the weight and ballance calculation. I have no bloody idea what the weight and ballance will be and thus the number of persons the vessel is designed to carry so I guess the next obvious thing is to design in the common sense amount of ventilation needed. Regs state that heating stoves under 4kw dont need a dedicated source of free air but I prefer to make provision for it as its common sense that what gets burned must be replaced. I will have a mushroom leading to a low level outlet by the stove which will provide for it (vent is a larger cross section than the flue), but how much more free air do I need to provide for the rest of the boat? The highlevel vents will be in the roof boxes

  24. Many Americans believe we all still live in olde worldy half timbered houses in chocolate box villages, so what message do we need to send to the outside world?
