Tiling and bath installation completed

The tiling in the bathroom has been completed. It has been grouted with Dunlop waterproof and fungicidal grout. All the tiles have stayed up, even the ones under the gunnel which are effectively hanging. A bead of silicone has been applied around the bath and all panel corners where shrinkage or movement is possible in future. The tiles used were 6" white gloss ceramic from Wickes and they only cost £3.99 m2 They were easy to work with and unusually, for ceramic tiles anyway, British made.

Two weeks into the Newcastle diet..(diabetic)

Here is my 2 week update...so I am now a quarter of the way through the 8 week...800 calorie a day diet.   Its become more difficult...as Christmas approaches..and everything is bloody food ! I have been strong though. My wife and I went to an Xmas get together..and the host kindly gave me fizzy water..with ice and lemon...which looked like a G&T so nobody questioned it. The food trays passed around...were distracting though. I'm OK...as long as people don't start questioning.   It is h

Diabetes type 2...update.

This is really for diabetics...as I was fearful that my original thread was going to be hijacked by dieters. I won't wax lyrical on this blog..and paint wordy pictures about the sun moon and stars... If you're reading this..its because you have your own problem and are interested...so I'll cut the crap.   Todays weigh in was 12 stone 3. That's quite a drop...but as I have said on my thread..I have a skinny build. Many men look right at 16 stone which is about where I was when diagnosed..but

The actual 'make up' of the Newcastle diet.

I'm not going to post my daily blood levels...suffice is to say I still have some... It would get a bit boring ..and '"lets discuss medicals"!!   I had a PM asking what I was actually consuming on the Newcastle diet and where I sourced it.   I have followed the regime quite closely. The main constituent of the original diet...was a product called 'Optifast'. This is not from the UK and can be imported but at huge cost. I sourced a product called 'Glucerna'..from UK Abbott laboratories...(th

13 December update...7 days in.

I'm not going to update this every day...but I'm 7 days into the 800 calories/day diet now.   It's not true that I just suddenly stopped eating...as I 'wound' into this over several weeks. I am not currently on my boat, being in a flat..on the seafront in Seaford, Sussex. I'm not sure..I could have handled this if I was on the boat?. Firstly...and most importantly..I am almost opposite my normal medical centre...where I can usually get an appointment within an hour..in an emergency (although

12 December update...

Today..(as suggested)..I have started a 'Blog'.   The entry today..is just a repeat of what I have written under 'forums'..but I will update it every few days so that anyone interested can see if there are results.   I orginally stared to ponder this ..when reading up about studies in the USA...and then around mid-this year...there was George Alageia ( ?? sorry George)...on BBC news reading out that the they had 'found a cure' for diabetes. It was then that I found out that the USA results w

Type 2 Diabetes..The start of ..'the plan'.

This is a repeated section from what I have listed in the forums. I will update it every few days to let anyone interested know how its going.   I know a lot of boaters have various diabetic problems...and so I thought I would put this on here as it may be of interest. I am commmitted to changing my current path...and thought I would put my progress on here. Please don't criticise...as what I am doing is extremely hard. I am not affiliated with any diet product 'sales' either...   I have

Bathroom tiling and plumbing

A bette steel bath has been installed in the short (46") through bathroom toilet.       The walls have been almost completely tiled in white gloss ceramic tiles. The mounting brackets for the tap unit had to be very carefully installed as the tap unit has tight tolerances. The pipework to this tap will be acceessed from within the wardrobe at the other side of the bulkhead.

Drawers under the bed

Large storage drawers have been installed to use the space under the bed as shown:     The three drawers are slightly tapered to avoid jamming when partly open and resting on the floor. Handles are still to be added.   The bed slats have been made and will be fitted later after I have completed work on the hot water pipework also under the bed. They will be quickly removable to allow maintenance access.

Pipework through saloon

The domestic water supply passes through the saloon from the tank and pump at the bow.   The two 22mm copper pipes of the central heating circuit also pass through the saloon.   The photos below show the pipes in the process of being boxed in and the completed run i it's aok casing. The domestic water pipe at the bottom has been insulated.

1975 Raleigh Swing bike....

Just bought this bike, which i'll hide away and give to my daughter at xmas. It's an unusual bike in that the rear wheel steers. It doesn't look very easy to ride but at least the rear wheel can be locked in the straight position. I've not seen many of these about..

Moving on today

Today was moving on day. Everything took muck longer than expected although there wasn't all that much to move on really as the lovely couple I bought the boat from left everything for me to move straight onto - even set the fire Met the neighbours as well as they seemed to be arriving from all corners for the weekend on their boats. So many names, don't suppose I'll remember them for a while. Talk about generosity- I asked where I could get some fenders as Charm does not have any. Whoosh! Spa

I am now Charmed!

I have just got home with the keys to my first narrowboat - it is called 'Charm'! Just what I wanted - maybe more - 40 ft, semi-trad, ready to go, bought from a lovely couple the old fashioned way with a handshake and transfer of funds in the pub! Unfortunately I will not be back to see her until Friday on which day I will go and load my first bits on her and start with my initial priority list; padlock for gas locker, lights are too dim, fill with water, remove and dry out the water in the engi

Sleepy Hollow's old, and too big, prop has gone to a new home..

The 22x22.5 prop which we removed from Sleepy Hollow as it was way too big for the engine has been sold. It is pleasing that the prop is going onto a replica star class boat built at Brinklow Boat Services, called Oberon. So it's being put to good use. My brother, or to be truthful his girlfriend, has cruised Sleepy Hollow about for a while with the smaller prop and he is very pleased with the result.

new little car...

With the Landy gone we needed some transport so I don't have to keep borrowing my Dad's car. Bought a little 1995 Peugeot 106 954cc for £425. Seems ok, came with 6 months tax, full mot and recently had a cambelt, water pump, exhaust and brakes. My daughter says it's the most boring car ever. I think it's close but i've had a Citroen zx.....     We'll keep a look out for a nice Landy while we drive this around..

made a trailer cover from an old tent...

Seem to have alot of old tents lying about so i've used one to make a trailer cover and frame. I cut and welded the steel tent poles which neatly made a frame. The cover was cut from the tent. it's old and thick canvas. Not too bad for effectively nothing. I had to make it this high to fit in my daughter's Raleigh Chopper which she is taking to a show at the weekend.

Engine room...

A bit of work on Sleepy Hollow. The engine room has been tidied, painted and some shelving fitted.     The one day the weather cleared, the 2 boats both had their roof painted. Sleepy Hollow has so far had 3 different colours on the roof so lets hope this one is the last.

Landy troubles...

Well, no one mentioned it so I guess no one on here noticed... BUT there is a major problem with the Landy. It's registration document dates it as 1965, but the Landy owner's club have informed me that Land Rover didn't start making the Lightweight military version until 1968 and that mine is more likely to date from between 1973-76. I did some research, a bit late I know, and they appear to be right, also a DVLA search on the reg number confirms that that reg didn't spend any time in the milita

New to the forum and hoping for some advice on moorings

Hi everyone I am new to the forum and looking for some advice. I have been viewing the forum for a month or so and already learned a lot. We are in the proces of buying a 45ft narrowboat and are searching for a sensibly located non residential mooring to use as a good base for leisure cruising. We like the location of the Oxford canal as we are moving to Wiltshire and like the idea of our boat being a little drive away and having access to the wider canal network. We wonder if you have any sug
