BMC 2,52 oil sump leak

I have a BMC 2,52 that has been fantastic for years. A couple of days ago I realised that I need to fix a leak in the oil sump, or try to find a spare oil sump. I tried ASAP Supplies, who could not help. Does anyone have any advice?

IF, and its a big if, the 2.5 is the same as the 2.2 then the rear main bearing cap seals to the side of the block casting with a cork strip. These can leak. I also faintly remember a horizontal cork strip that traps between the rear main and back plate. Both could cause a leak but check my memories in the manual.

I don't see how a sump in a boat can suddenly start to leak unless its a cast one that has cracked and if so the sump will probably have to come off and unless you are a contortionist its probably faster and easier to take the engine out.

Tin sumps can be welded or brazed. Cast aluminium ones can be welded by a specialist aluminium welder. Cast iron sumps can be welded or brazed by a specialist, stitched or at a push repaired with some plastic metal type product (Milliput?)

When we got our boat in 2003, ours did on our 1.8. The sump pump was mounted on a solid copper pipe. After years of waving about, it tore the side out of the sump

It isn't like that any more

Thanks a lot for fast advice!

I have to read closer in the manual and do some further checking.

You may find taking pictures from underneath the engine with a mobile phone is helpful. Put it in selfie mode so you can see what you are taking pictures of

I have a feeling that on the cast 2.2 sumps the rear left corner is where the sump "plug" fits. If is it may well be a leaking oil pump adaptor. I think it may be time for torch, mirror and contortions.
