Borrowing and anchor

Just to try to get things in to perspective, and to help the OP with his original question, can anyone point to an incident when a narrowboat was lost on the non-tidal Thames due to the lack of an anchor, when the river was not on red boards?

I suspect not.

I was surprised to learn whilst watching a recent documentary that the function of the anchor for sea going craft is to anchor the chain and that it is the chain that does most of the anchoring work. As others have mentioned this would seem to explain (to me at least) why it is important to have a suitable length of heavy chain as this does most of the work. This was contrary to my previous (mis)understanding of the function of the anchor.

As I have never had to use an anchor in anger I would be interested to learn whether this also applies to narrow boats on rivers, always happy to get educated particularly when my previous understanding seems to of been so wrong.
