Boat Electrics

Featured Posts

I'm aware that online eBooks are in a somewhat grey area, but judging by the number of posts about boat electrical systems, I'm sure some will find this useful...

One of the blog sites I follow contains link to an eBook 'Essential Boat Electrics'

Some other interesting/useful stuff on the site too

It seems a good book!

However I do get the feeling that this draft PDF probably shouldn't have got into the public domain so if you want to download it I would do it quickly before some one tips off the author or publisher.

The book normally costs about £18.00 of which I believe a small donation is made to the RNLI.

I thought I'd download the book but all the numerous options for so doing are in some weird shit incomprehensible gobbledegook that I don't understand, not PDF, so I avoided it. I downloaded one but was told I don't have the software to open and run it so I deleted it pretty damn quick I can tell you. Don't want no dodgy crap on my machine.

Steve

Steve it's not a problem, and the document is sound.

The file is in a .RAR format, which is a bit like a zip file. If you go to open it, windows should ask you how you want to open it if it doesn't recognise it. You then have an option to search the web which should find a program called winRAR on a site which gives you a free download of the program. Install that then you can extract it like a zip file. It's worth it!

The .rar format is just a compressed file (of a .pdf document in this case)

You just need a simple 'uncompressor' - Winrar is available as a free download here: http://www.winrar.com - PLEASE SEE THE BELOW POST BEFORE DOWNLOADING FROM THIS SITE - Jon

The file is not dodgy at all...

IMPORTANT!!

DO NOT download the version of winrar from

english.ircfast.com

This is one of the download sites listed on www.winrar.com

As this contains malware (identified aqnd cleaned by AVG)

I did not try the other download site listed, once bitten... etc,.

IMPORTANT UPDATE!!

Do not use www.winrar.com

Read this Trend report for full details

http://blog.trendmicro.com/index.php?s=win...utton=SEARCH%21

Or do a google search for 'winrar malware'

The correct site is shown in the trend report

This is the official trial DOWNLOAD.

Save it somewhere then run it. (You can virus scan it first if you choose!)

I have used Winrar for years without a problem.

As garry says the official site is www.rarlab.com

Here is the first part of the Trend labs report

"A WinRAR-lose situation

June 20th, 2007 by Trend Micro

If users wanted to download WinRAR, the popular archiver tool to process RAR and ZIP files, where would they go? Chances are, they’d type in the name of the tool itself and just add .com (www.winrar.com) in their browser’s address bar. Unbeknownst to them, however, the said site is not the official site from which the legitimate tool could be downloaded–that would be www.rarlab.com, actually.

TrendLabs has just received reports on how unsuspecting users could end up downloading malware, instead of WinRAR, onto their systems. When they try to click on the “Free Software Downloads” button in www.winrar.com (as seen below), they would be led to another page where they are prompted to click on “Download Winrar”.

More of the report can be found at

The pdf files are hardly any bigger than the rar files, so there's no real advantage in download speed. The rar files might actually be more secure, but only if they are pukka to start with.

If anyone wants the pdf instead of just the compressed file, PM me. I might get round to emailing you a copy, but...

I notice Gary said there was a small donation to the lifeboats from sales of the handbook: presumably either Dutch or American lifeboats. Could I suggest anyone who finds the book(s) useful makes a small 'conscience' donation to the RNLI?

I offer my most humble apologies for that winrar link...

Like Gary, I have used WinRAR sucesfully for many years, but since I've not needed to download another copy for a very long time, thinking I'd to be helpful I did a Google and that was the link I came up with

Please use the link Gary provided!!!

Drinks on me methinks...
