Old Elephant and Castle, Aldermans Green near Hawkesbury

In recent times since this pub was converted into a private residence, I have noticed that the 'right of way' path giving access off the canal, has been totally blocked off. The access point on the Fishing Tackle Shop side of the road bridge was open as usual, however this requires negotiating stairs. The pub side access is a ramp.

I have just cruised by and noticed the access off the canal is now open again. I wondered if anyone knew the background to this long running issue. Just being nosey :)

There was big hoo har on Facebook a while ago about this. Apparently a man bought the pub and converted it into a private dwelling. He tried a land grab of the access way and blocked off the path to the cut on that side. The City Council got involved and made him open the access way again as it is public right of way.

James Avery Now we still need to work on long term protection because once he has technically discharged the planning condition, I'm not sure what they can do if and when he blocks it again.

James Avery Email from council:

"The owner of the property contacted officers this morning to confirm that the works to improve the footway surface were complete and he was instructed verbally to remove the fencing and reopen the accessway.

Officers are inspecting the site tomorrow to confirm that the fencing has been removed."
