Traveller
Have read a lot on this forum about water based paints and like others on here I have avoided them at all cost. But, if the water based paint is an exterior paint suitable for metal what really is the downside? Thanks
Chewbacka
I find oil based paints flow well whereas water based paints tend to have brush marks. That said, water based paints do dry quickly, so if you are painting in the open a quicker drying time may be good - less time to collect dust and stuff. Traveller
Thanks Chewbacca. Thought it might be about flow and what you say re painting outside is apposite.
dave moore
Working in the business as a signwriter and boat decorator, none of the yards I cover use water based paint, but then they all have covered docks. I suspect you may struggle to get a decent finish with water based paint, inasmuch as it dries so quickly. Having said that, my experience is limited to domestic water based stuff and Annie Sloan chalk paint, others may know differently... Bee
The domestic water based paint never seems to have much of a gloss and as said, brushmarks are tricky but - and here I am not at all sure of my facts, I think that some vehicle paint is now water based and is built up with a few coats and then a clear lacquer is applied on top, don't know if this could be used on a boat but might be worth finding out more. Neil Smith
All new cars are now in water based paint and most large paint shops, but they are sprayed on then baked in an oven. Neil
Traveller
Is it a fact though that oil, based paint is on a downward slope, from the point of view of the environmentalists (or the EU) that is? If so something will have to ke its place.
