Week to go! Gayton - Coventry - Market Harborough - Gayton

On Saturday off again for our two week cruise, wetted our appetite last weekend by visiting Stoke Bruerne whilst on the way to a wedding and watched the working pair "M/NB Towcaster & Butty Bideford" working the locks.

Saturday 19th off on first trip with our 8 month old Puppy "Poppy" from Gayton Marina, first up Coventry and then back down via Braunston and up to Market Harborough before returning to Gayton a fortnight later. Not speedy as first trip with the dog on board (got her a lifejacket...she is not sure about that!) but with the odd tunnel and our first set of staircase locks should keep things interesting!

Can the panel recommend some good dog friendly pubs / overnight stops en route? Also about halfway through would be looking to resupply the food stores on board between Rugby/Braunston/Crick. what would be the best place for a shop stop?

thanks to all!

Not sure which pubs are dog friendly but there are lots of great rural moorings on the stretch between the A14 bridge and the Welford Arm (on the way from Crick to Foxton). Moor up and barbecue on the towpath. Big Tesco store about 10 mins walk south from Bridge 58 in Rugby.

Another vote for the Wharf at Welford. Out of 6 main courses 5 where excellent. The chicken and stilton pie was a bit disappointing IMHO.

Very good range of beers though. Get there early if you want a good mooring.

The Foxton Locks Inn, right by the bottom lock, serves good food, has a great view of the bottom lock, and overlooks the junction with the Market Harbough arm. It is also dog friendly. They have a 'doggie' area in the restaurant.

A good place to re-supply would be Crick. Plenty of good moorings opposite the marina. A short walk to the Post Office which is also a local convenience store, or for more choice there is a good Coop store about five minutes walk further on from the Post Office.

Thanks for all the advise. Have eaten at the Wharf, Welford, in the past so can vouch for that! This is our first trip with the Dog, she is 8 months old and I am not sure if to be more concerned about her being in the Tunnels, running around the locks (she has recently discovered that she LOVES swimming,) or having to jump out of the way of cyclists! We have got her a lifejacket that she will wear when we do the locks and go through the tunnels! Looking forward to it, not been afloat (well on a canal boat) since last October.

EDT to change from super small print to stuff people can read!
