Hi All

Does anyone know what colour the gray paint is on a Gardner engine.

And please dont say Gardner Gray.

I need some to paint the engine room and to get it from Gardner it is £60 for a tin.

Richard

Gardner engine paint will be a heat resistant paint. Use swatch cards to match the colour, and then buy accordingly.

Hi Big Col

Ive been through everything B&Q have and nothing is remotely near.

The best i have at the minute is if i take a lump off the engine and take it into B&Q they have a machine that will read it and match it up.

There appears to be a lot of blue in it a sort of blue Gray.

The man from Gardner said it was enamal

Hi John

Gardner 2LW rebuilt and polished by Northwest engine services nr Chester,

it is only 2 years younger than me i was looking for a 1951 build but the neerest i could get was 1953.

I wanted a slow reving put, put, engine and this was the one, i fell in love with it when i first saw it and then when i saw it again with all the alloy polished up i fell in love with it again, tick over is 250rpm and it is now in the boat and run for the first time last w/end.

No silancer just a straight through box. it sounds the dogs do dars.

2:1 reduction box with a 24'' prop and trad hand wheels/ gear change etc.

I have just unearthed a Masons paint colur chart which has over 300 BS and RAL numbered paints listed. The sample samples are quite small but they may be of some use, there are quite a few greys. I have no need for this chart but hung onto it just in case it ever came in useful. If you think it might be helpful, I would happily send it to you if you email me your address

Sounds great Richard, I built a nine foot engine room with half a mind to install something similar at a later stage, (told the spouse it's a workshop) I don't suppose I will get around to it now.

When is the opening day / commissioning trials, must test the searchlight in person.

O John it will be 2 years at the rate I'm going,

But I'm hopping to move it from Atherton to Cheshire in April, then i may get a bit more done.

The other lads that are fitting out have done more in 2 weeks than i have managed in 5 months, I'm only getting about 4 hrs a fortnight on the fitting out, once it is up hear i should get most w/ends and nights to work on it

I did not have 9' to spair so it has gone in a 6' room.

Hi John

Yes i have one now, take it over on the 1st april.

Over the last 4 years i have been walking up the Shropshire at Audlem and there was one i always fancied.

When the lady from BW said she had found me one there instead of the henhull one and said go and look at it i never drempt it would be the one i had admired for years. but it is that one.

The water at the bank is very shallow but the lengthman says he will get me in. if he has to flust a lock of water through and once in it will soon clear the silt. seems a nice chap.

Hi Richard.

Glad you are fixed up. Boats will do their own dredging up to a point but don't sit it on the mud but pull it up on the mooring lines a couple of inches every day, the natural, constant rocking of the boat will do the job.

Most boats are on pontoons at my marina and before the canal was dredged the last time we used to get some silting between the boats and the canal channel, the marina owner at that time would encourage everyone to run their propellers occasionally to keep the access clear.

After I did that on one occasion a passing boat, well didn't pass but came to a sudden stop on my little pile of silt, now transfered the canal. I didn't own up but we got him on his way again after a while.

  • 3 years later...

I just bought a can of Gardner-friendly paint from Tony Redshaw's. It is apparently one RAL number away from the colour which the restorers (Walsh's) apinted it but Tony reckons that his is correct. I can't remember the price but think it was about £30 including postage.

Hi,

I bought a small tin of Gardner Grey from Gardner Enthusiast, cost about £18. I tried to match it at B&Q and various paint specialist but with no luck. Be careful with the low 250rpm tickover, around 420 is recommended and if you have a PRM gearbox the oil pressure may be too low and will cause damage.

I have a 1957 2LW, with pics before and after the rebuild,

Legendary Engineering excellence.

Albi.

PS The Gardner engine rally is well worth a visit, held every 2 years the next is 2009.
