1.8 lnjector pump fuel leak

Featured Posts

My injector pump throttle spindle has developed a leak and is dropping diesel into the engine bilge. Now I'm sure I've seen any number of topics on the matter but can't find any using the search facility. Can anyone advise as to wheather it's a DIY repair or does the pump need to go to a specialist. My problem is that I'm near Tamworth on a 3 month cruise. If it's a DIY repair can anyone lpoint me in the direction of a spares supplier. Presently the problem is annoying rather than terminal.

Many thanks

Frank

First of all make sure the throttle cable adjustment is not trying to force the lever beyond its stop screws. That can force the spindle to one side and cause the O ring to leak.

Access on a 1.8 is more difficult than on a 1.5 but given a reasonable practical ability and the ability to use a bit of finesse fitting a new O ring could be a DIY job. However absolute cleanliness is required and you need the correct sized O ring made from the correct material so maybe taking to a local FIE place would be easier. (No idea about that area).

Look at where the pump bolts to the back of the front plate on the engine. I think you may see a triangular adapter plate with a little pointer screwed to it. If so taking the pump off and refitting it is easy. Thee drive has a master spline on it so that can only go in one way. That pointer should point at a line scribed on the pump flange. If there is no line apply a centre punch to form your own datum mark.

It may also be advisable to get the main shaft seal changed at the same time. There have been a few cases of this seal leaking and diluting the engine oil on 1.5s, but I am sure it is only a matter of time before 1.8s start t suffer.

I have done mine (a BMC 1.5 which is very similar) and I am a rank amateur. It's not difficult but heed what Tony Brooks says. There are a few posts with pictures in the BMC forum.

Thanks for both your replies and comments. Couldn't respond earlier due to site access problems. Having positioned a drip tray to catch any fuel I've decided to live with the problem for the moment. It's simple job to suck up any diesel with the Pela on a daily basis. It's only a few cc's

Tony, I'll take your advice and have the main shaft seal replaced
