Halfords 20w 50 oil 5 litres for £16

Called into Halfords yesterday to get some oil for my boats annual oil change and was pleasantly surprised that they had a 20% off all 5 litres of oil . So the Halfords own brand classic motor oil 20w 50 API SE CC normal price £19.99 was only £16 .

I was even more pleasantly surprised when my 1.5 after 20 seconds of glow plugs started immediately having last been started on 3 rd November 2014 .

None of the normal white smoke before firing up which I can only attribute to replacing the glow plugs and cleaning out the carbon just over a year ago .

There have been many threads on this forum about brands of oil . I don't know who makes the Halfords

oil but it has the correct specification for the BMC 1.5 so I'm happy to use it .

It's a greeny colour a bit like the old Duckhams 20W 50. The filter I used was a Mahle OX 13 £3 from my local motor factors so oil and filter change for under £20 , bargain .

I need to do an oil change next weekend as part of the annual service, would you recommend Halford's Classic oil? I was thinking of using Millers but am open to persuasion.

EDIT it's a CT Marine 1.5 BMC B series engine.

I'm not sure I know who blends the Halfords classic oil, but would not be 100% surprised to find it is someone like the well respected Morris.

Unlike some cheaper oils, I would have no reservations about it in a BMC, though I admit I'm going more on "gut feel" than a specific knowledge of this oil!

As only pay £62.00 for 4x5 litre containers of Morris Golden Film (formerly Classic) SAE 20W/50 API SF/CC, I don't bother with any non branded oil.

I get it from these people:- http://www.classic-oils.net/Product-125/Products-by-Application/Engine-Oils/20W50-Multigrades/Morris-Golden-Film-20W50 That price does not include the delivery, but as i visit Aylesbury regularly it is not a problem to collect, I also get special oils and additives for my friend at the same time, who has a 1932 Riley Imp.

Just bought another 10 litres ( 2x 5 litres) of 'Classic 10W40' that is especially blended to the old CC specifications.

£37.01 for the two cans (inc VAT)

Called "Qualube Series 1" it does not appear on their website.

The following is widely used in 'old boat engines'

Qualube Classic Elite

Manufactured to bridge the gap between non additive lubricants and the highly additive treated lubricants of today. Especially produced to service the requirements of older vehicles possibly first registered between 1945 & the 1960’s. Made from high quality mineral oils that have been enhanced by anti-wear and antioxidant additives. Manufactured in SAE 20, 30, 40, 50 & 20w/60 viscosities.

Qualube’s Classic range of products has been designed for veteran and vintage vehicles that need a different approach to lubrication than those of the modern age. Our business was established in 1921 and so we have grown with the unique specialist knowledge and understanding of how to provide the right lubricant for the right vehicle as engine technology has developed over the past 90 years. Avoiding harsh additives and allowing debris created in the combustion process to not linger in the lubricant which can cause damage, we know how to care for your vehicle. Whether its engine oil, brake fluid or gear oil, we have the products in this range to drive those special Classics far into the future.

Several of the classic car forums think its blended by comma. Ive been using it for about a year in an SR3, and its been the best thing I've tried for the price. In fact, if its back on sale, I'm about due an oil change..
