Big book of boats?

Does anyone you know of any books or websites helpful to id boats?

The reason i'm asking is that i would like to sell mine and embark (see what i did there?) on a new boat project. I would like to get a "sea-going" shell so i can go across the channel to France, Holland, etc. Something small but habitable. Need to research from now to possibly be able to start doing it from next spring.

Anyway, just would like to have a ref book to see what exists and to match the different terms to pictures.

Thanks

Hi ya,

I think a few sites like Apollo Duck, Boat Finder, Boats & Out boards Ect Might be a place to Familiarise yourself with a few different Makes & Models of Craft, Then when you see a particular Style or Make of Boat, it's time to hit That spcific web site of boat to find out more. I'm a Full time Livaboard & up until recently a CCr mainly on Rivers, Coast, Estuaries & any Canals I can get on. & I've seen all sorts of boats when I've done my channel crossings, but I must say, imo if you are going to livaboard & Travel at sea, I wouldn't really want to go much smaller than The boat I've got now (41ftx 11), it's a size I can handle by myself, but is big enough to cope.

Do you happen to know if there is one like yours for sale ?

Wow!......How big is you're bookshelf......at a quick glance I reckon I have about 6 or 8 books on general boats and probably 3 times that number on specialist sections of boating like fishing boats or barges.

Paul is probably right with his idea of looking at sales sites to see whats around at the moment.................................................................. just seen Alans post .....laugh.png

Funny you should say that Alan,

Yes I do.

The Sister boat to mine (& the only other one of same design with a Wheel House I believe) Called 'Otters Dream' I think it's on for about about £70.000 Apollo Duck (if it's Still there).

But I think the OP wants a small cheaper project boat, so not really suitable I don't think.

Nice plug though Alan, (pint & a Donut on it's way), Look about 4 pages back on the for sale & Wanted board, under Nulife 4-2 for my boats details, it might be available again as from next month if I haven't heard back from an interested party by then.

I am not looking to buy anything right now or anything ready made. I live in a 60x12 i bought as a sailaway and my "sea" boat project will be along similar lines. I do look at boat seller sites but of course you only see a couple of pics and not the full description of the craft, much less pics of the hull.

Ahhh got ya,

Well there are pictures of my Sea Otter Hull around, to start your research folder.

But I would suggest you pay as much attention (if not more) to a crafts Category, this by it's self would be a good guid to it's Capabilities.

I'm guessing you would want a minimum of a Category 'C' or even a 'B' if you get the bug.

Good luck.

I purchased a secondhand copy of a book called "Motor Yachting and Boating" by Peter Heaton ,published by Pelham Books. ISBN 0 7207 0626 2 .It was first published in 1973,so some things are a bit out of date .The basics hold good and it is an easy read,Worth a trawl through ebay .I paid 50p for my copy.

I have been going through my library to see if I can find anything that might be of use to you....

The first is one that became my bible 30 odd years ago when I first got into steel boats and I would still recommend it to anyone contemplating major DIY on a steel boat for the first time it also has a good section on firms doing plans/kits for steel boats

Own a Steel Boat by Mike Pratt 0 370 30157 9

and

Start With a Hull by Loris Goring 0 7153 8744 8

this is from the mid 80's and although concerning almost exclusively GRP has some very good information generally although a bit opinionated and a little dated

by the same author a two volume set (I only have vol 1) this is the oldest of the three and is from 1971

The Complete Motor Yachtsman's Manual vol 1 0 245 59956 8

All three of these books are very useful but Mike Pratt's book possibly is more relevant especially if you are considering building your own hull
