Is anyone familiar with this make of tank?

without peeling off the insulation from around the tank can anyone tell me if what appears to be a small bung between the pipework is the entry point for an electric immersion element please?

Unlikely, it looks at least from the photo, far too small even for the smaller 1 1/4" BSP size but untill you dig it out so it can be seen properly even that answer could easily be wrong.

I don't see a TPR valve anywhere. It looks about the right size for that.

Look at the second photo' red knob, TPR / PRV if ever I saw one.

look at this months Towpath Talk (you can do it online) page 36 there is a photo of a cylinder that looks like yours and you can see the boss in it.

You may be right but I cannot see any sign of a boss in the middle of the tank. The hole in the top feels like it is threaded. I might have to peel away some of the foam for a closer look but you have to be a contortionist to get to the tank.
