Bmc 1500 marine rev counter

Hi all, I am a newbie to this kind of chat so please be kind, I have a sea master with a bmc 1500 disiel engine, but the rev counter does not work, where is that wired into and what makes it work according to how it should revolution speed wise.

On an engine like that they are usually wired to the alternator

Depends how old the boat is, if old it may have a mechanical drive from a dynamo or a take off on the engine. As Richard says most likely to be electrical from the alternator but some had inductors on the front pulley or flywheel to make the pulses.

Thanks both, mine has the alternator so I'll investigate that route first, will it be a single wire off the alternator. Thanks again

Connects to the W terminal of the alternator.
