Building bulkhead for bathroom

Featured Posts

I intend on doing the same on my new shell/fitout. The bulkhead plywood is trapped between two battens either side.

The bulkhead will not cut through the floor - but probably just be connected to using "L" shaped steel brackets hidden behind a cupboard or under the shower etc. You could always use glue.

Ian.

As is the general consensus here always complete the flooring and lining out before thinking about bulkheads, you will probably be tiling the bulkhead so don't use anything less than 3/4" plywood, shutter ply is a good, low cost, waterproof material but it must be covered both sides.

The accurate cutting is a bit of an art which may be better dealt with separately but fixing the bulkhead in place is one of those jobs that is far more easily accomplished when you come to it than you anticipate before hand.

You will find that other fittings and fixtures brace thinks up at a later stage but fix a one inch square or triangular beading around the joints on both sides, screw these in place around the deck-head, walls and floor but not onto the bulkhead which will be then allowed to float a little.

Avoid using glue on jobs such as this, you never know when you may want to disassemble things and anyway things are better when left to float a bit.

We got the bulkheads in our sailaway lined done by the builder.

They use 3/4" vaneered ply.

They are trapped ceiling and walls by the lining.

At the floor they are held with screws angled into the floor at approx 22.5 degrees from vertical. Seem pretty solid.
