  1. Thanks for the reply Geoff We were wondering if it might be a bearing on the camshaft...the noise seems to be coming from that area there is a large panel in front the engine room that exits into what used to be the cargo hold...we are assuming that this is the way the engine went in in 1957 rather than from above...presumably we could get a hoist inside to lift the engine up and forwards to give access all round. the chap that repaired the cylinder head has said that if it proves to be the problem he will repair it free..I have a spare head gasket so if we need to remove the head again thats not a problem Am going to drain the oil and hunt for the causes of out loss of oil pressure...any suggestions for troubleshooting oil pressure problems She is such a lovely engine (was a pleasure to cruise through europe and she handled the channel really well) would be a shame if we couldnt repair her thanks again Ian
  2. Thanks for getting back to me I was worried it was serious...main bearing was what I was thinking...would the crankshaft have to come out to replace that? I know that pistons can be replaced through the side of the engine ...would the whole engine have to be removed to get to a main bearing or could it be accessed through the front luckily there is good access all around the engine..I'm able to get spares that this engine shares in common with the single and double cylinder models so pistons liners rings etc but anything exclusive to the 3 cylinder model is very hard to track down thanks Ian
  3. Thanks for your reply you were exactly right we had several cracks across the valve seats had the head gas flow welded and she ran better than ever for a couple of hours then we lost oil pressure and she overheated (bit inconvenient as we were in a shipping lane near Gravesend at the time) Symptoms were loss of power, smoke from oil filler cap (coolant water was flowing and at its normal temp of about 40 degrees) engine was extremely hot we let her cool down and tried to restart and she fired first time but we now have an unhealthy whirring/grinding noise coming from around the crankshaft pulley we shut her down immediately and haven't tried to start her since on removing the crankcase cover there is a strong smell of burnt oil was wondering if maybe the oil pump had failed or if the pick up tube was blocked any suggestions as to what the problem might be... having a job finding an engineer that knows these engines.....we are now on the River Lea at Hackney Wick after getting a tug to London
  4. Hi I have a 1957 mwm engine Raw water cooled dry vertical exhaust Just changed head gasket after getting sooty water coming from the exhaust The problem is still there Removed exhaust manifold and found water in one of the two exhaust ports Suspect it might be time for a new cylinder head Anyone have experience on these engines?
  5. diesel cooker on ebay wallas 87D http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140537382876#ht_1284wt_1139
  6. Reverse osmosis 300 gallons a day £120 ebay you may want a strainer to get the lumps out first tho
  7. why not get a composting loo...nothing to pump out...and you can grow vegetables with the resulting compost... there are no problems with having a separate grey water tank....i recommend you get a manual or electric pump out kit fitted...then you can easily pump out into an elsan point without having to pay for the privilage ...electric boats are now a viable option....check the solar boat company or the electric boat association.....i recommend covering the roof with teflon thin film solar panels...not cheap but should provide ample power any surplus can heat water...you will need lots of batterries and probably a backup generator .....an electric boat user.......yes they do exist
  8. Having fitted a solid cherry wood floor in my new boat I would recommend some insulation underneath for two reasons You may well get cupping if you ever have a leak in the bilge ( I did in the bathroom) And also in winter the floor can be remarkably cold underfoot and also make sure you have an inspection hole at lowest point of the boat to pump out the bilges My battens are about 60cm apart and my boards are 10cm wide 18mm thick and there is no discernable movement of the boards
  9. i can sell you some great AGM baterries 110 AH ex aircraft baterries have been using the same type on my boat ( two banks of 10 x 110ah ) and they perform brilliantly can run my pc /washing machine baterries/ jacuzzi /tv for over a week without charging mail if interested
  10. Well aged 26 I set up my first restaurant with £10k and broke even within the first two months I have done the calculations and I'm no stramger to fitting out boats and restaurants I agree the restaurant business is tough (for some people playing roulette would be a safer bet) however with a sound plan, the right skills and a tight budget it is posible to do something spectacular without risking a fortune
  11. Well thanks for all your replies I'm looking for a boat to use as a restaurant and only on the Grand Union and Thames from Paddington to Brentford and Brentford as far as Windsor so the 14ft beam wouldnt be an issue (correct me if i'm wrong here) It looks like there may be major structural considerations in building a boat this wide (i only want it to be 55ft long) and if that pushes the price up significantly then maybe i should look for a narrower beam and slightly longer also I think maximum air draught would have to be under 7ft 6" (no wheelhouse for me) As far as lines go I really dont care what she looks like externally in fact "shoe box" suits me just fine I have no interest in the boat looking like a tradditional narrowboat merely gaining the largest interior space for the least money Anyone out there know a builder that can come up with the goods?
  12. anyone out there reccomend a boatbuilder who can build me the cheapest possible no frills 14ft x 60 ft widebeam shell with an engine
  13. thanks Geoff...my email address is aaa_ian_@hotmail.com and thanks to everyone for their advice managed to get the engine started by pushing all the levers forward getting some momentum and then releasing them one by one .......thanks again everyone......time to change the alternator next..its a lucas...does anyone know anywhere near northolt that can recondition one Ian
