Charger for the Batteries

Ok going to make the leap and et a charger for the batteries, stirling seams to be the middle range, any advice please !!!

 

i've a normal set up 3+1 but in future might add another domestic so advice please as to what to buy (eg 30 amp or more()

Electroquest 30a' cheapish, robust, twin output. Works fine

A guide is the charger is 10% of the battery bank - ie 500 amps battery bank = 50 amp charger. A bit lower is OK but obviously will take a bit longer

A bit higher is best so would advise 50amp min covers 3 x 135a = 405a + starter but add another 135a then 540a + starter then you need 60a min.

Remember always allow for future.

With your set-up I'd certainly go for a charger that's 10% of your proposed battery Ah total

I think it's best to do away with the croc clips and hard wire direct to the batteries for better connections. Just my opinion

What will you be powering the charger from? It's a waste to run a 3K genset for a 30A charger when it would run a 60A and take less time. If you are at the end of a long mains lead then a 30a charger may be the most that will run well.

I agree I don't use the croc clips but the hard wire with a fuse holder .

In my opinion, Sterling are 'alrightish/budget end' - Victron are good - Mastervolt are best

All have their problems. Friends had loads of trouble with a Mastervolt set up.

When I had problems with a Stirling split charge diode they changed it for free even though it was well out of warranty. "We had a bad batch about the time you bought that, take this replacement and try that" they said. I hadn't even been able to diagnose what was causing our electrical problems at that stage, it was they who said it would be the diode. They were right too.
