WW2 Bomb damage in Smethwicjk GKN works

Laurence Hogg

Featured Posts

This picture was unearthed by John Hodgkinson at a car boot sale. After some discussion we think it is the GKN works on the Cape loop in Smethwick. The distinctive tops of the buildings are still there today and we would estimate it was shot from either Crawford st bridge or the immediate northern side near to the bridge. Visible under special techniques the joey nearest the camera has "No" in the panel at the stern which is concurrent with GKN's livery. Anyone wish to add or comment on this?

This picture has in the past been identified as Anchor Iron Works in Oldbury, on the loop looking towards the railway bridge. Of course that doesn't mean it is correct!

In concurrence with Martin, I have a copy of this photograph and the source states that it is the London Ironworks on the Oldbury Loop. The GKN works were more restricted in space and such a view would have been more difficult to obtain. Also the buildings on the Cape Arm looked somewhat different to this view.

Yes this image and where it is of interest and still needs clarification. Laurence Hogg suggested it was on the Cape Arm, but the Anchor Ironworks and London Works at Oldbury were suggested.

Looking at the 1938 ordnance survey the Anchor works was on the Oldbury Loop near the junction  and close to Whimsey Bridge, whilst the London Works was north of the Oldbury Railway Bridge.
