Dah da dah da dah da. Fire!!!.

While everyone's droning on about the pitfalls of PM's.And whilst their pontificating over that and perhaps neglecting other things, like their boat may be about to burst into flames, or sprung a leak and be about to sink.

Well for peace of mind anyway here's a way of instantly extinguishing a fire more or less instantly and automatically.

YES!!!Its a homemade sprinkler system. This unlike one or two of my past wheezes is a serious one, well kind of so follow the instructions implicitly.

Gather together the following;-- An old lavatory flushing cistern, ideally an old iron one with a long pull chain,a ball of string,a few meters of 10mm copper tubing and a few small pulley blocks.

Bore a big hole in your roof next to your stoves chimney the size of the flush down pipe from the cistern, about 3'',bolt it down over the hole on some goo.Drill a smaller hole in the roof inline with the flushing pull chain.

On the cisterns flush lever lash a heavy weight so that it causes the lever to dip.

Drill hundreds of tiny holes at all angles in the copper tube and fix it all over your coach roof, whirling it about all around the vicinity of your stove.Blank off one end of it by whacking it with a hammer and folding over and whacking again.Poke the other end up into the cisterns flush orifice and seal around with more goo.

Make a little crane above the flush lever on top of the cistern outside and fix a little pulley on the end. Take one end of the string and tie of on the end of the flush lever, thread it up through the pulley and down through another little hole in the roof. Now dot lots of small pulleys around and about your stove especially around the back of it.Now thread the string in spiders web fashion through all the pulleys and pull gently taught and tie off the end to something.

That's about it folks, you'll have to wait until a fire breaks out to test it though but of course you could start a controlled one.

The idea is that if the stove gets out of control or something like curtains catch fire or wood panels ect,the great big leaping flames will burn through the string causing it to part and so cause the cisterns flush lever to dip and so cause the water to by gravity run into all the tubing and sprinkle water all over everything and so extinguish the fire.

A slightly simpler method could be rigged up with fire extinguishers all connected up with the string and aimed at the stove and surroundings, but they make a horrible mess if they go off.

The more safety conscious folk i expect will jump at this one for their peace of mind. And yer never know this sprinkler device could become compulsory. Hazzard.

PS. Lag the cistern well for the winter in case the water should freeze up.

That sounds terrific, any chance of some engineering / working drawings to help me get the install just right?

Cheers

Sorry, they're top secret and i wouldn't know how to stick em on here anyway.

That might not stop the cistern on the roof from freezing though.I don't want to be held responsible for any fire damage or anyone getting burnt if it failed to operate.

Is there a way one could substitute a fish tank for the cistern? - some people may find them more aesthetically acceptable.

Sorry a bit too fragile,a stone thrown at it,no sprinkler, boat burnt to a cinder.

Also RSPCA men and police dragging you off for endangering goldfish. P.S. Telling them to get stuffed tends to make them even more angry as they don't like stuffed animals, birds or fish.

True but they wouldn't see em in an iron cistern.
