The rain is just starting here so we are happy to be home while hoping the (new) boat next to us goes out for a week so we can push across and wash the offside of the boat for the second time this year. From the hammering on the roof it's pouring now so time to watch the cycling - currently tour of spain BUT the US procycling challenge is on http.//shacktracker.usprocyclingchallenge.com/ live video (free) with all the tour de france climbers racing at high altitude with the commentry by the (usual) english commentators is on later in the evening ending before 11pm - with sound and pictures but pictures on the passes only if the TV picture relay plane at 16,000 over Aspen does not ice up again and have to decend.

Took friday off with the intention of getting a couple of days boating at least when it may be a bit quieter on the water, but the rain put the plan in disarray so we stayed home instead. Horrible, miserable day.

Tomorrow, weather permitting, we will just do a jaunt from Sawley to central Nottingham with the intention of popping to the cinema. I quite fancy the idea of taking the boat a bit further on Sunday, back onto the Trent and mooring at the embankment near the Forest ground (I have tickets for the Forest vs West Ham game), but may just leave the boat in the centre and walk to the ground as we will have to get back up to Sawley on Sunday afternoon/evening before it gets dark after the game.

Did fancy the T&M this weekend but don't fancy spending two days dodging narrowboats on what may be a busy weekend.

We're on the boat until end of next week. Original plan was to head down towards oxford, but with the water level issues on the summit, we decided to head north up the oxford instead and have a look up the Ashby canal. Yesterday it rained all day, so we arrived at Braunston rather damp. Today has been better with showers rather than constant rain, but we're still trying to dry out everything from yesterday! We're moored at Newbold tonight. 'Turnaround' point will be about midday tuesday, so whether we will get right up to snarestone will have to be seen.

If you see us along the way, give us a wave!

All being well we'll be heading north on Monday morning with no destination or other trip details planned, save that we have to be back for a hospital appointment in 4 weeks.

Thoughts of going via the Leicester arm to Burton and returning via Minworth have had to be tempered due to the current restrictions. We've still not totally ruled anything out but wonder whether we'd use less water by heading to/from Brum via the Northern Oxford or via Kingswood Junction despite the seemingly slightly more restrictive lock hours on the Oxford.

Lets hear it for the 5%ers. I am a house dweller with a rainproof coat and a manic desire to be on the canal come rain, shine or snow ... see you out and about in November

:D I like 5%ers some of em break the ice for us.....

We are staying tied up Bank holiday weekends are always a big no no for cruising there are far too many house dwellers out there blocking the system, but hey it will soon be october and 95 percent of em will be tying up for the winter. Think Ill cruise all of november its fab then :D

Excellent idea after some on the sights I've seen today between Blisworth and Wilton (GU)!

Only problem with your plan Mrsmelly, winter stoppages are due to kick off 7th November

Well NC flew through her safety test but the weed proved to be very tricky to navigate on the way to and from Boston. We wont be going that way again this year its just too bad, plus we have knackered another prop on the dinghy with the weed infestation.

This was the mess we found at Bardney Lock. We had to flush the weed through before we could get any boats in. Two lock fulls in the end had to be gotten rid of.

We then battled through various different types of weed in the river.

Before stumbling across this stray struggling with the weed. Their main 15hp outboard had overheated with the weed and the little auxillary wasnt making any progress. They had about 10 miles to go to get to Boston Marina, where we were headed anyway so we hitched them alongside and towed them in.

The wind and some slucing from lockie at Boston did clear the river a little overnight but not enough to make getting back upstream much easier.

Thats the last time for this year that we are heading so far down the Witham. We will stick to the Fossditch and Trent now. Much less weed to worry about.
