Renting out a narrow boat

Featured Posts

Dear All,

Does anyone know if there are any regulations regarding renting out a narrow boat to tenants? Do you have to inform British Waterways or the Environment Agency (or any other authority) that you've rented your boat out for someone to live on?

Thanks,

Jon

You can find the information on running a hire boat on the Waterscape website

In a nutshell people do it, alot, but bear in mind any insurance you have will be void should anything happen to the boat, and they find out it was rented. This is because ordinary boat insurance only covers boats that are not rented out

I've seen and heard some horror stories in London. A boat sinking where the tenant lost everything and the owner couldn't claim a penny for the damage.

A boat fire in an unsafe boat, could go on....

The quick simple answer, do not even think of bothering.

It has been discussed a few times on here and the cost, licence, insurance, higher standard of BSS certificate etc. do not make it viable.

Of course this is only my opinion.

Well it will certainly cost you more on set maitenance and insurance.

Whether its worth doing depends on factors only you currently know.

costs verses reward..

seriously the Insurance angle is doable, but you must approach it correctly, especially if the boat has gas appliances... as these impact the bss etc etc.

have fun reading the small print
