Does anyone know at what temp calcium starts to deposit out of water onto the heating element within the tank, be it an immersion heater or a heating coil ?

Well, according to wikipedia (yes, yes, I know):

 

... at temperatures above 70 °C (158 °F) the soluble bicarbonate is converted to poorly-soluble carbonate, leading to deposits in places where water is heated.

 

It quotes Cranfield University as its source for that information.

Thanks for that - I wonder if that's why Beta fit a "70 degree" thermostat to reduce the calcification issue in the DHW tank ...

 

I will pass on the info, although I think with an immersion heater, the surface of the element will always be much hotter ( or try to be) than 70 degrees...

Best thing your friend could do would be to fit a water softener. Not terribly expensive, yet highly effective.
