I wonder where my nuts have gone

Featured Posts

Woohoo I now have a matched pair of nuts - and a very clean bilge. :)

It was the VAX that found the missing one for me. It had been propelled across the engine compartment - maybe by landing on the water-pump pulley or the fanbelt - over the top of the battery box and down into the small space on the far side. It's a small space that I can't reach into by hand, and can't easily see into with a torch & mirror, but knowing it was an area I hadn't checked yet I started by putting the hose down there and was immediately rewarded with the sound of a nut travelling up the pipe.

So now I can stop worrying about suddenly hearing the sound of nuts from inside my engine. Thanks for all your suggestions folks.

No nut in side the engine...

It's the one on the outside that's the worry....... ;)

At least you found them... It's the sort of thing that can drive you mad..... Just waiting for the inevitable to happen :(

I was just thinking about Mk1 Ford Escort engines I have taken apart, where one piston would have lots of little round dents in the top. The carburettor had a valve consisting of a cylindrical weight and a little ball. If you operated the throttle with the top off the carb, the ball and weight would jump in the air and disappear down the inlet manifold. Clearly previous owners had not been so conscientious/paranoid as Allan and the engine swallowed and spat out the little ball
