Hi,

We have now bought our boat and it has a 24V DC system. Does anyone know best places to buy 24V bulbs, bayonette incandescent and halogen type. I've found both but on seperate web sites, so having to pay postage twice if I order (and being a Yorkshire man)

Any help much appreciated

We have used http://www.lightbulbs-direct.com/ in the past but these days we get any replacements we need from Midland Chandlers.

We have experimented with LED bulbs but they tend to be expensive and just do not provide the same homely lighting effect as traditional bulbs - the best buy we ever made were a box of 24 'heavy duty' bus bulbs that we found on ebay, three years ago, for about £6 - they give out a very warm light and seem to be almost indestructable.

It is worth adding that limiting the search to 24v can be quite restrictive. Adding a search for 25v bulbs produces a much wider range of options and 25v bulbs work just as well on a 24v system - which is usually somewhere in the region of 25 volts anyway!

Just had a quick look at http://www.lamps-on-line.com/ (searching on 24v and 25v) and they seem to have every light bulb we will ever need and at very reasonable prices!

I converted the bayonet bus-type bulb holders in our 'reading' lights to MR11 holders so we could run GU4 halogens which given a whiter, more powerful, more directional light.

- Originally the plan was to run LED GU4's in them which we bought a pair of (10-30vdc regulated) but although the light is very good considering we have opted for the 30w dichoric halogens. Which seam fine in the fittings as the bulb size is so much smaller the is enough space around them to keep the temp sensible.

I found these people to have a good range. http://www.bltdirect.com/product.php?pid=10467

Most of the boat however is lit with 2d florencents, which can be bought from the supermarket.
