I'm in the same predicament... I'm wondering whether or not I could bodge together a cover out of tent material - you can get a 4 man tent for about £30 in Tesco. It would have the added bonus of being really easy to pack away into a small space, but I'm guessing it wouldn't work otherwise I'd have seen it done before.

 

This bodge cost about 3 quid

Not if they have used braided rope with a stretch element, which is what the commercial cratch cover manufacturers use.
