Barton Swing Aqueduct

The website states

Notice is hereby given that Barton Aqueduct (situated on the Leigh Branch of the Bridgewater Canal) will be closed to navigation during the following period for annual maintenance.

The annual maintenance closure is programmed as follows:-

From 4.30 p.m. Sunday 2nd March 2008

To 12.00 noon Saturday 15th March 2008

Does anyone 'in the know' and from past history know if the 12 noon will be brought forwards or delayed.

We are hoping to do the Wigan Flight on Sunday and ideally would choose to go up early doors. If Barton opens on the nose at 12 we will not achieve Plank Lane bridge before it closes at 2 !

Fun fun.

In the past the Aqueduct has opened first thing on the Saturday, and Plank lane bridge should be open all day, this is no word of it being closed at 2pm on the BW site. Have fun going up Wigan..where are you heading for..?

In the 'opening times' on the stoppage summary it says 10-2 mid-Nov to mid-March. The key question is when is mid-march, 15th/16th ish so I have e-mailed BW for clarity.

We are bringing our new boat back from Stoke to Barnoldswick.

Another stoppage we witnessed yesterday was the stoppage of ale retailing at the Kirkless Hall pub at the top of the Wigan Flight.

Another victim no doubt of the relentless tide of pub closures currently sweeping the country.
