I spent the first 8 years of my life living close to St Helens, and the only bit of the Sankey Canal I saw was "The Hotties", where you could see the steam rising above the broken glass topped high brick wall in St Helens.

 

The steam was the result of cooling water taken from the canal (by the Pilkingtons ("Pilks") glass works) being returned back to the canal at a considerably higher temperature.

 

Once my grandmother had moved to Haydock in the late 1970's, I explored most of it.
