shunt type ammeter - where to buy?

I am trying to buy 60-0-60 shunt type ammeter (with shunt enclosed) which would be easy to wire - I am not very good in electric.

Could anyone suggest where to look for one? I tried search option but couldn't find anything specific.

Thanks

Jakub

Off at a slight tangent, but still relevant.

I understand that a Shunt Ammeter allows you to use thin wires to the ammeter rather than route the charge cables through it. If that is the case, is it possible to add a shunt to a standard Ammeter?

Hi David.

I think there is some slight confusion here.. The instrument part of a shunt type ammeter is effectively a voltmeter though calibrated in Amps. The 'shunt' is effectively part of the circuit you are measuring, it causes a very small voltage drop across it, typically 60 millivolts.

So the instrument measures that small voltage and displays it as Amps.. Yes the two conductor from shunt to meter as they carry only a tiny current can be very light.

The calibrated meter and shunt must be bought as a matched set..

The above description is for a mechanical analogue type but electronic digital types are the same in principle.

It is common in some applications to have several shunts in various parts of the circuit, you can then select one of them with a rotary selector switch.
