As a comparison, my Webasto uses about 0.5 litres per hour for the first 20 minutes from cold (ie: about 0.2 litres actual) and, after that, about 0.25 litres per hour continuous running.

 

I just checked the fuel the other day having only done 18 engine hours since last fill up and having had the Webasto on for several hours in total. I was amazed to find that I had only used 20 litres of fuel total (engine is an Isuzu 35).

I agree - in both senses. About 1 litre an hour is what I've seen in the manual and yes - they do like to be looked after.

 

Following a recent post on here I've just added 'Fuelset' to my tank (it is recommended by Eber if running off of typical marina red as opposed to agricultural red) and it has made a massive difference. Heat output is well up which in turn means I can run it for less time and because it is running hotter it should coke up less.

I heard that only their engineers can fix them - can you take out service warranties?

Ours has just had a service, by the people who used to fix the night heaters on Smudge's lorries. He did say though that they don't like red diesel, which is why it was all coked up!

Like anything else, of you stick to the manufacturer's guidelines and advice you probably won't go far wrong. Eber do say that lower grade fuel (like we get at marinas) can make them poorly - in particular they coke up and then the glow pin dies to boot. Hence I've taken Eber's advice and used Fuelset. There are much dearer additives out there that make all manner of promises but I've gone for Eber's recommended product.

 

Just having said I use Eber's recommendations I refuse to pay £43 + VAT for a glow pin. Someone on here recently sent me a link to a VW specialist who does the same one (made by BERU who I believe make themn for Eber) at around £14.

 

They do need to be re-set by a service bod ideally if they lock out but there are sites that tell you how to unlock them - they all seem to require that you have a timer though - if you haven't already got one then there is a very usefull Ebay place in Guernsey that sells them cheap on account of the display being in German. However as the only part in a language is the days of the week this isw hardly a problem.

You know they aren't really that bad if you're careful with the fuel, all the rest that are based on vehicle heaters suffer problems with fuel to some extent too.

 

There are a few other alternative at a price other than those based on true domestic heating systems that do like gas oil but even those if the fuel is old and purely stored will cough a bit too!

 

 

In all honesty if you're looking at liveaboard the vehicle heating systems aren't the best way to go, but they are the cheapest!
