I used a Pela oil extractor through the top of the gear box. It is quite possible to make a dip stick holder attached into the drain hole, but I never got round to doing it. Steer it along the cut! In my experience Kelvin gearboxes happily self-drain by leaking out quite fast. Re-fill it by taking off that 'lozenge-shaped' cover on the top plate and pouring fresh engine oil in through the hole revealed. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
BEngo Posted August 9, 2019 Report Share Posted August 9, 2019 If it is leaking badly either the white metal bearing/oil seal in the clutch thrust box has had its days, or the shaft is misaligned. 0000 Posted August 9, 2019 Report Share Posted August 9, 2019 The brass plate states: Renew oil in reverse gear once a month. Correct quantity 1/2 gallon. Excessive oil creates heat. I think it safe to assume that "once a month" refers to 24/7 use. As stated, the easy way to remove oil is by vacuum pump if you have one. If not, the level tubes connect into base of gearbox held on by two bolts which is cast with the following: Remove for cleaning (i.e. draining oil).
