  1. Hi all and hive mind - question: how often does a boat need painting? I had a professional paint in 2017 but blacked to the gunnels. Paint is now looking tired and i have topped up/done areas but am unsure how long a professional paint job should last (am not impressed with job done btw). I did try to search google and this site for this but have had no joy.
  2. Can I ask for advice on what top coat paint people would recommend for a wet bathroom floor? Rust had come through the previous one, which I’ve sanded back and treated and now primed ready for painting. It doesn’t need to be particularly slip resistant though that would be beneficial.
  3. We're about to have the decaying linings replaced on our side hatches and rear doors. What do you recommend to protect wood that gets regular exposure to weather, though isn't permanently exposed? At present the frames and inner doors seem to be peeling polyurethane varnish (sigh), and Easter will be spent sanding and re-doing at the same time as we finish the new linings. I was going to use yacht varnish (looking for a good brand) but a bit of research on google is revealing all sorts of other wood coatings such as traditional varnishes (?) and things like Sadolin wood stain (clear?). We are happy to spend time applying good stuff first time round but are notoriously bad at regular maintenance of such things, so long-lasting and easy to touch up with minimal prep time when tatty always wins over perfect finish. I like a satin, not gloss, finish and it'll have to match the existing oak, or not look startlingly out of place. Any advice welcome! Thanks
  4. Having progressed well with the work on our cottage, our next major project is to return our boat to a satisfactory state. We have already had a visit from a highly respected boat painter and the professional advice is that, as a first step, we should get the boat grit blasted all over and then sprayed with an epoxy primer. The hull has been blacked with two pack epoxy (and re-coated every two of three years) from new but the upper works are really showing signs of our total neglect during recent years. So the question is, has anyone here put their boat through a similar process? If so, we would appreciate any guidance on who the best contractors are and/or what the likely cost might be.

  6. Hello friends, Does anyone know a good outdoor spot in London where I can paint my boat? Also, does anyone have a recommendation for poly tunnel rental in London? Thank you ever so much Stefan
  7. Are there any drawbacks to a repaint in winter? I have found a slot in Jan or Feb next year.
  8. Hi! I've been living on my lovely boat for about six months now and have worked up to the biggest issue on the list of problems the surveyor gave me–full external repaint. The boat is 18 years old and has never been repainted from new (I have to say, from a distance it still looks pretty good and despite being a red boat it isn't pink!). We're moored under a tree and need a professional to fix things up, so I'm trying to get advice/quotes. There is a hire boatyard ~100m away from me who have offered me a fairly low price, but they are open about saying that my boat is too long for their polytunnel and it might not get the best finish possible. But the paintwork is fairly plain (red with white outlining each panel and the boat's name in white/black. I want to keep it the same as people know the boat) and their boats look okay and get bashed about by idiots on stag dos. What I care about is getting a paint job that will last and stop rusting. There is another hire boat yard at Heyford who sound reasonable and have an indoor space. And there is Oxon boat painting who are really far away, but have the most information on their site! I'm not sure how much I should care about finish? Should I just assume all these people know their stuff and will do a good job? Sorry if this is a total n00b question! I've tried searching and found nothing.
  9. Hi everybody. Not sure if anyone remembers, but I posted a few months ago with reference to narrowboat door panel sizes (whether standard or not) - we are looking for head for the cut as the children get a little older, therefore don't have a boat as yet. I cut portraits and other items using scroll saw techniques, and would really love to re-create the 'Roses & Castles'. I have discovered that the traditional techniques are slowly dying out - which would undoubtedly be a tragic shame. I have started creating my own templates (as with my other work) and used a technique called Segmentation, to cut the image. I have used the standard Humbrol oils, although some of the mixed colours are not quite true to form. I would really like any comments or opinions, as this would surely help me to get this important traditional art form correct. I'd like to make it perfectly clear that this is not a sales pitch in any way - I'm experimenting in the early stages and here seems the perfect place to ask for advice. Contact details of anyone who's an authority on Roses & Castles would be perfect. Thank you for reading, and any comments are greatly appreciated. Kindest Regards, Nick.
  10. Hi All, I'm about to start painting with Jotun paints. Everyone I've spoken to suggests using Owatrol paint conditioner to get a better finish, however when I spoke to the helpline they advised against it, saying it will go on fine as is (although it's probably what all paint manufacturers say) and said to just use thinners instead, if anything. Does anyone have any experience of using these 2 products together? Thanks Steve
  11. I bought my 51' narrowboat early last year when it was only a couple of years old. Plainly it had poor preparation before it was painted as rust is now coming through from under the paint in so many places. From personal experience who can you recommend someone who can take her back to bare metal and do a good paint job at a sensible price? I can take her to anywhere on the cut.
  12. Hello, New boat owner here. If this subject has been tackled before, please feel free to point me toward that thread. The stern of our trad is rather rusty, so my understanding is that I need to sand it, apply rust treatment and then paint. As my boat is in the water, how do I sand it without causing damage to the water/ wildlife? Is it suitable to use a hand sander with a vacuum attachment? Thanks, Gemma
  13. Hello Everyone! I have a 9.60 m steel cruiser that needs painting, only above water structures. I enquired in quite a few marinas but I can't find one that would lift the boat (10t) and store it 3-4 weeks while I do the job (as often they do it themselves and understandably want to make money). Can anyone please suggest any facilities either on River Great Ouse or River Cam? Also, is it possible to moor up on visitors mooring for 48 hours and do little work on the boat such as replacing toilet unit and putting a shower unit in? Thanks in advance Guys ! Enjoy the sunshine !
  14. I am having my boat repainted next year and want to spruce up the tired anodised gold window frames which are scratched and tatty. I have read a post on this forum from 2007 and noted that there might be some new primers available 9 years on. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions please. My boat painter has never been asked to do this and is wary !
  15. Boaters all, I want to replace the tired, 90s laminate floor in the galley that still makes me tiptoe with bare-feet as if i'm in a youth hostel. I know it's marine ply beneath, though thickness I'm unsure of. Obviously I could simply replace with new vinyl or laminate and problem solved. But now i'm thinking about painting the floor instead. Since there's no insulation there to speak of anyway, I don't think it will be any colder than it is now, which doesn't bother me anyway. But is it okay to simply paint the marine ply? (with appropriate prep and paint of course). Has anyone else got painted marine ply flooring? Thanks, Andrew
  16. Hello everyone I've purchased a new boat as sailaway + additions. The boat is painted in colours that I don't like, the reason I went ahead and purchased despite this was because circumstances meant we needed to find a boat to buy much earlier than planned and this matched our needs bar the paint! The boat is painted in a black gloss with a red coach line. I want to re paint it myself but I'm not sure exactly what will be entailed. As it's newly painted, would it be enough to sand it down enough that the surface becomes rough and then just paint the toplac on top? It's a dark turquoise colour I'll be painting so I think it will be o-k over the black. Any advice appricated. Thanks Caitlin
  17. Hello all! Just a quick question - does anyone know if there's anything wrong with curing bilge paint by running the engine? (I'm thinking of exhaust fumes, mainly). Does anyone have any experience of this?
  18. Hi all, I've recently spent a lot of time scraping and prepping the roof of my narrowboat to be repainted. I am considering my options for the roof paint, with little experience as this is my first re-painting. I've been told about the difficulty of cleaning sandy mixed patches, so was wondering about covering the whole roof in a non-slip alternative. I have heard about someone covering their roof in a textured floor paint which worked well. Does anyone have any views on this or any advice on other non-slip textured roof paint would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Martyn
