  1. Restrictions soon to start on Thames locks from Pinkhill to Abingdon if there isn't more rain (which there isn't going to be...) Assume they meant to include Osney. And doesn't yet make it clear if they will be manned the whole time from 9am to 6 or if it will be haphazard midweek depending on lock keepers other duties...needs to be done though.
  2. I will soon be living modestly in a small 10-15ft boat. I aim to constantly (long-term) move between short-term mooring around Osney Island (or anywhere between Iffley and Port Meadow). I've read a bunch of great threads (>2yo) on similar topics, and am seeking advice on the practicalities of this approach. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Motivation: My wife and I have recently separated - we both want her and the kids to continue to living in our flat near Osney Island, but this leaves me no money to find my own place. I'd like to live nearby with minimal cost so I can continue seeing my kids every day. I believe constantly moving between short-term mooring locations offers the ideal solution.
  3. This happened yesterday, a serious fire and a dog died: http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/11850969.Man_taken_to_hospital_after_boat_fire_at_Castle_Mill/ http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/11853317.Woman_loses_dog_and_possessions_in_boat_fire/ The boat is part of a "land grab" of moored boats on the castle mill stream in the no-mans land between the oxford canal and river thames. http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/11283663.Boat_people_in_land_grab/
  4. Now and again, one of the Agenda 21 mooring spots in Oxford comes up for auction. In case anyone's interested in the trend, one such auction ended this afternoon and went for a whopping £6605 p/a. Guide price was £2706. That's 244% of guide price, and the highest amount paid yet for one of these spots at auction. I wonder if this is part of a general trend, or something to do with the cracking down on CMers around Oxford, which might be increasing competition for legal moorings?
  5. Hi all, we have just bought our first 16ft river cruiser and looking for somewhere to moor it/ store it in oxfordshire, we are in woodstock. Please can someone help us or point us in the right direction!! THANKS
  6. Hello! I'm moving to Oxford in September to start an MA and I've been thinking about getting a narrowboat to live on whilst I'm there. A room in a house would be £400/month minimum and I'd much rather put the £5000 living costs for the year towards a boat instead (I realise some of that would go on various licences, fuel and fees, but I'd imagine less than half). I've started to research boats and their costs, and I've spent a day travelling through London with friends on their narrowboat, I want to illustrate that this isn't an idle fantasy but something that I'm considering carefully. However, from my research it seems that Oxford is a difficult place to find a mooring. I called up Osney Mill and was surprised that they have no residential moorings and weren't able to suggest anywhere else I might call. I asked about continuous cruising, and was told there wasn't anywhere I'd be able to stay near Oxford for more than a night or two at a time (whereas most of London seemed to work on a 14 day basis). At this point, I'd be open to either a permanent mooring or cruising and I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for either. Apparently its possible to apply for an Agenda 21 mooring, so advice on this would also be well received. I'm planning on visiting Oxford in the next week to do some ground work, so please let me know if you'd like to meet Sam P.S. I'd also be interested if anyone was looking to rent space on a boat that they used lightly.

  8. Hi! I've been living on my lovely boat for about six months now and have worked up to the biggest issue on the list of problems the surveyor gave me–full external repaint. The boat is 18 years old and has never been repainted from new (I have to say, from a distance it still looks pretty good and despite being a red boat it isn't pink!). We're moored under a tree and need a professional to fix things up, so I'm trying to get advice/quotes. There is a hire boatyard ~100m away from me who have offered me a fairly low price, but they are open about saying that my boat is too long for their polytunnel and it might not get the best finish possible. But the paintwork is fairly plain (red with white outlining each panel and the boat's name in white/black. I want to keep it the same as people know the boat) and their boats look okay and get bashed about by idiots on stag dos. What I care about is getting a paint job that will last and stop rusting. There is another hire boat yard at Heyford who sound reasonable and have an indoor space. And there is Oxon boat painting who are really far away, but have the most information on their site! I'm not sure how much I should care about finish? Should I just assume all these people know their stuff and will do a good job? Sorry if this is a total n00b question! I've tried searching and found nothing.
  9. Apologies if this has been posted before but I thought I would share this article from the Oxford Mail 18/06/2014: Interesting situation in Oxford where the Council, C&RT and the EA all seem seem to view the boaters as "problems" who need to be eradicated or at best "managed". The last couple of years has seen Oxford Council crack down on boats without home moorings through Unlawfully Moored Boats Enforcement Group (Umbeg). Continuous cruisers on the Oxford Canal are being served patrol notices much more frequently and told to move further away or threatened with section 8 when returning to the canal. The EA has recently taken to evicting boats after only 4-5 days stay, and sometimes with police escort. Oxford Council has tried, and sometimes been successful, in getting local landowners to put up "No Mooring" signs in areas where boats have previously moored. At the same time there are no new moorings being established in Oxford. The last CRT mooring to be auctioned off went for £6005/year. That was an Agenda 21 mooring, which is ironic, since these moorings where established with a policy to promote sustainable development and affordable housing . I think these factors all have contributed to the "Boat people in land grab" situation that is described in the Oxford Mail. Shame that none of it is mentioned in the article.
  10. We're near Rickmansworth at the moment, on our way to Brentford. We're looking to pick up a PLA Thames certificate for a month, cruising towards Oxford, eventually getting onto the Oxford Canal. The Thames is new to us, though we have done the Calder & Hebble, and the Aire & Calder last summer - we're hoping there's not much difference, except maybe bigger locks and challenges. Am I right in saying the part of the Thames we'll be cruising is not tidal, therefore we don't need to dig out our anchor? What's the chances of the Thames being in flood during April / May? Does anyone have advice how mooring access and facilities work? Do we need different keys, or other implements? (We got caught out with the 'spike' needed on the Aire and Calder). What about red/green navigation lights, are they obligatory? Any advice would really be appreciated.
