  1. hi, does any member experience problems with using a sky box and a sky freesat card(cost £20). The reason i ask is that i have now taken all the kit home so that i can leave it on mains power so that sky can send a message to the box. I have no electricity at my mooring and only run the tv and sky box off an inverter so it only powered up for approx 4 hours at a time. Speaking with sky they tell me because its not permanently powered up this is the reason for the problems. Is this the what others find? cheers, Steve
  2. Hi Richard, approx £600 for paint 2 primer , 2 undercoat and 3 top coat coats of paint. i was lucky i had a free supply of abrasives and tack cloths etc. Sign writing was a good price of £200 and wet dock was £150 per week. I am pleased with the end result but it is not as good as a professional job. however at least there is plenty off paint on the boat compared to some of the local painters i have seen. Steve
  3. Hi, i am actually responsible for automotive paint production for a well known company so i understand a fair amount paint. I have recently just painted my boat and i chose to use Craftmaster paint. I understand why coach enamels are expensive and it was my choice to use these to acheive the results that i wanted. I followed Phils advice and would recommend Craftmaster paint for is application and the service is excellent, i even went and watched Phil's team painting a boat to gain as much knowledge as possible. My only advice is that we did it in two weeks in a det dock and that is much too tight you should ideally have a minimum of three weeks. One of the reasons that paint jobs cost so much is tha t its bloody hard work. cheers, Steve
  4. Hi Geoff, if you are using automotive type filler i would recommend applying directly to bare metal suitably abraded. GALV X by U-POL is very good for adhesion. cheers, Steve
  5. Hi Gazza, thats what i thought but the oil level is well down towards half full and i thought if i had it running on fast it would burn off any oil but it smokes very badly under load but ok when ticking over. The smoke i can cope with but oil is misting over place cheers, Steve
  6. Hi, i have a hardly used Honda 1.0 EUi generator and before i put it in for repair i was wondering if any one has had a similar problem. I think i ran the oil a little low but all was ok until i carried from my boat approx 100 yards to help a guy at my mooring. It failed to start and there seemed to be petrol in in the oil. I have sinced changed the oil and now it starts ok but now when under load it smokes very bad from the exhaust. The smoke is white/blue. Any ideas???? cheers, Steve
  7. Hi TC, i had the same problem but i have posted about adding a "flap" valve fitted in the pipe from the engine to the calorifier not the return and all works ok and our hot water is back too remaining hot. I think you can get these from Aquafax, i got mine given to me. cheers, Steve
  8. Hi, I have tried searching but i thought i would just start a new topic. I have been using brewers yeast in a mansfield dump through toilet for quite sometime but lately it has not been controlling the odour as well as it used to. I have switched to BioMagic and pleased to report that there has been an immediate improvement with no smell. I will obviously continue with this and hopefully problem solved. I thought i would just share my findings with forum members. cheers, Steve
  9. Hi, after speaking with Dor i have at last fitted a flap valve in the flow pipe of the engine to the horizontal calorifier and i am pleased to say that even after leaving the boat for 48 hours after the engine acheiving normal operating temperature the hot water was still fairly warm . This would have been totally cold before fitting the flap valve and it has drastically reduced any loss back to the engine over night. cheers, Steve
  10. Hi mate, try contacting Calcutt boats i think they should be able to help. cheers, Steve
  11. Hi Salty, I have a Perkins D3.152 in a semi trad which i think would be very similar to 3HD46 and i think the 3.152 is an older design. The engine sounds ok but i personally would not want in its own egine room. As far as parts go i have found Diperk at Peterborough very good for spares and advice. I also found Calcutt Boats very helpful for advice and parts when i was having problems with my engine. cheers, Steve
  12. Hi Andy, that sounds great, i should think a lot of the forum members are more than a little envious. good luck |Steve
  13. Thank Allan, that makes my decision very easy, i will stay where i am. I wondered why the mooring is now vacant and the boat that was on it is now in a marina further north. cheers, Steve
  14. Hi, this may have been covered before but if it has i apologise as i ahve been uable to find it. My question is if you find a farmer willing to let you moor on the non towpath side of the canal what will he have to pay bw or does the moore have to pay them seperately. sorry if this is a silly question but if i find a mooring i don't want to be on the wrong side of bw. cheers, Steve
  15. Speaking from my own expeience i have always found the staff at LEESAN extremely helpful Steve
  16. Hi, I was sitting here thinking about our very first boating holiday just after we got married. We hired the Colleen a four berth from Two Tees boatyard in Cambridge or just outside. I was just wondering if any forum members had previously hired from TwoTees? cheers, Steve
  17. Hi Paul, we replaced one on my father's alde booiler and it is very easy just a case of undoing the large nut and the fixing screws. As DOR said Alde are very helpful and you can go direct to their reception for buying parts but they are based in Wellingborough, Northants. There are two expansion tanks depending on which model you have. Alde also advised against trying to repair the tank as previous customer attempts had never succeeded. hope this helps Steve

    Dover

Hi, we saw Dover moored in Braunston Marina a couple of weeks ago. If i remember correctly earlier last year Dover was for sale less than 100K. We have also seen a family out cruising on Dover at Long Buckby probaly the first owners after the TV show. In my opinion i think the boat looks very nice but wether i would like the under cloths cabin is another matter but it doesn't matter as i have not got the money anyway!!!!!

    Supalux

Hi Lee, B+Q did have a cement board in 3 x 2 sheets which I, used this is not aquapanel. I tested this before use by heating a piece with a blow torch for a considerrable time with now ill effects. I have also found that when our stove is on the ceramic tiles get too hot too touch but when i feel the other side of the ply wood that i fixed the cement board to there is no heat build up. Our Stove has been fitted nearly two yars and all is ok. Cheers, Steve
  21. Hi, Thanks for all the replies. the reason for the post was really to get an idea of what people were paying. I have a local guy who i have seen carry out excellent work currently putting together a price so we will have to wait and see. cheers, Steve
  22. Hi just wondering are there many forum members having their boats painted this year and any ideas of cost? I have seen from various websites prices do vary considerably and i do know the amount of work on preparation differs greatly. cheers steve
  23. I agree with Carl. However one point i would make if you see a sign on a boat that looks in say not the best condition it doen't fill you with confidence and thats not being snobby either. It is often the case that mechanics will drive around in any old crap cars because they spend all day working on cars.
  24. Thanks John for the replies. I was asking about the measuring to see if i can actually fit the larger prop. cheers, steve
