  1. His name was, and probably still is, Mark Williams. Ack-ack guns stood down to level 5.

  4. If you have a silencer, it could be that this has corroded inside, and doesn't muffle certain frequencies anymore. Therefore, the exhaust "note" will chnage as you go up the rev range.
  5. I've been making a hash of it for 35+ years, and am never afraid to use a rope. Is this a good opportunity for me repeat my mantra of 1) ALL crew members (5 yo and over) learning how to coil and throw a rope, before the trip starts, 2) Ropes being left coiled ready to throw. Yes it is

  7. If you get a message called "look at" from "deleted member" - don't bother, its an advert for Viagra and the like. Just delete it.
  8. Wonderful. I wonder what the chap on the converted boat intended to do with the bucket of water. Did he miss deliberately ?

  10. Thanks for that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And the sister programme about the Elizabethan canon of Alderney.
  11. Howzabout a nice big 12v battery ?

  14. Carl, Please let us know what the lift out date is. It'd be great to come and see the lift. Thanks

  16. Over 60' will mean you can't use the Leeds Liverpool canal and associated waterways. These were designed for 60 X 10 barges, so you'd miss Bingley 5 rise and Foulridge tunnel. The main system, ie Oxford & Grand Union in the south to T&M & Shroppie in the north and west to Llangollen are 70 X 7 (apart from the 14' GU main line of course). Not sure about the fens. On the other hand some old narrow canals (ie Stratford South or Trent & Mersey have one or two well known "tight" locks or bridge holes so beware a boat too near to 7' wide (or over !).
  17. If you hire a magnetic drill, don't drop it whilst clamping it on !!

  19. A while back on ITVs WaterWorld, I saw a short film about a chap who had modified a cordless drill to operate paddle gear. He'd added a small gearbox to give more torque and less speed. Word was that this excellent idea was heading towards production.
  20. First airing of "Countrywide" tonight at 7.30pm on ITV. 2 minute slot after the half way adverts on a couple whose boat is called 'senior moment'. Nice to see some sort of canal coverage on TV since the demise of Waterworld.
  21. I think you did OK. Its a dynamic thing, water depth, weir currents, wind and trees change the situation all the time. I reckon one should slow a little, move over in an attempt to pass L to L about 4 to 6 feet apart. As the boats pass side by side, the suction pulls you round so that you're pointing back towards the centre line of the cut. Heavily laden working boats will tend to need the deeper water. So I've been known to pass R - R (on a LH bend) to give them the deep water, even tho' I am 60' long. Clear signals in good time - no problem.

  23. A week seems ample for DIY, unless the weather is awful. You could consider getting some tarps and tenting yourself in. Aim for three coats, allow 24hrs between each coat, and keep going until you run out of time or paint. You'll need a 6' ladder (or two) to get in and out of the dock, and your gang plank. You'll need wellies to start with, but after 24 hrs it'll be almost dry enough underfoot for carpet slippers ! Buzz over the hull with an angle grinder with wire brush attachment, to get the worst scale and crud off. Arm yourself with a dozen INDUSTRIAL (quality & size) paint rollers & trays and just throw them away after each use. While you're there, check, replace or even add more anodes. Check the prop for dings and remove fishing line etc from the gland. If fitted, check the split pin too. We did it a couple of years ago in Hatton dock in October - see below :-
