Would agree with what Mike says. We decided to follow the advice from this forum (and others) and bought a second-hand boat which hopefully we won't lose too much money on.
We've only been on it for about 5 months and what we started out thinking we wanted has changed at least half a dozen times. Hopefully by the time we start looking for a boat to live-aboard in a couple of years time we'll know what we need (but no guarantee)
Good luck, hope it all goes well
Well I would assume that a boat with a BSS certificate will be worth more than one that isn't. Like the old car MOT certificate, not that hard to forge or get hold of a blank to fill in.
Thanks for the added info
There are some people that you know would never be suited to that way of life. The problem for a lot of folk, me and the missus (aka The Boss) included, you don't know until you try. As for coercing a partner into a major change in lifestyle, that's never going to end well
Apparently SC have no money but are able to award a 3 year contract to a private contractor (Servest) to maintain their buildings for the next 3years!!!!
And if all the hire boats are stuck on that stretch I can't see it being very pleasant, I've got visions of spending the summer queuing to get anywhere
I attended a burglary some years ago on a house that had internal CCTV fitted. I had to sit for 20 minutes trying not to laugh as I watched footage of the owners Doberman excitedly following the burglar as he ransacked every room (unfortunately I couldn't control my sniggering when at one point the bloke stopped to pat the dog on the head)
Check they have straps and buckles to secure under the body. I've seen some which just velcro round the chest and belly, would think if you tried lifting the dog with those the velcro would just come apart
Would agree with the others, you need one with a handle
If someone is determined to get in then all the padlocks/mortice locks/yale locks won't stop them (I have however found a 7 stone GSD quite helpful)
What you're doing is trying to make life awkward for a casual thief (bone idle ned/junkie...insert other descriptions here). If it's too difficult for them they'll go find an easier target.
Morning all,
Will need to re-fill my stern gland greaser fairly soon
Which make/type of grease do folks recommend. I've read that you should steer clear of copper based grease
As AllanD says you can go from the Kelpies to Edinburgh. Once you've passed through the Falkirk Wheel upper locks you are lock free until Edinburgh and the bridge at Lochrin Basin.
That'll probably take a week. Do visit, it's worth the trip
