  3. Seconded. He surveyed the last two boat we sold and, rather bizarrely, I ended up representing the buyer at one of the surveys. He was very thorough and I strongly recommend him.

  5. The winding hole at the station is very wide and deep. The only problem is that some boats find it a very convenient place to moor - but even if there is a widebeam one there, you could still turn a 48' boat. The one near Bulbeggars Lane can be OK, but the owner of the land might come and shout at you. Also, the water level in that pound is a bit unpredictable. You could probably also wind at the rear of the Esso garage, but there are frequently moored boats in the way.

  8. The best plug top ever made, with many great features - one of the best being that all the cores are cut to the same length!

  10. Having used large numbers of them in my working life, my first choice would be Kraus & Naimer - they are still pretty well made.
  11. Thinking about the topography, I reckon that the paddles were probably raised on more than one lock - but not on all of them.
  12. Apparently the incident caused flooding as far down as Billet Lane in Northchurch, so a fair volume of water must have been lost.
  13. The south side is the non-towpath side of Dudswell and the land there is a bit lower than the canal. I suspect that the water went over the bank just above the lock, but my informant's message was lacking in detail!
  14. According to my man on the ground, there was flooding in Dudswell last night, with water getting into the gardens of houses on the south side of the village.

  16. I will ask a friend who lives in Dudswell if his house is underwater!
  17. There is one word missing from the list for the one I was "taught"!
  18. The latest batch of resistors I ordered, as well as being tiny for 0.4 Watt ones, seems to have the stripes painted in Farrow & Ball colours - very muted and more or less indistinguishable from each other. Has anyone managed to purge from their memory any of the very non-PC mnemonics for the colour code which were in common use 50 years ago - or do they immediately spring to mind?
  19. Two photos from the Berkhamsted Local History & Museum Society Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BLHMS/ The first one is above the Riser and the second probably heading towards Lock 56. ETA Taken in 1954.

  21. Out of curiosity, AMD 2900, Intel 3000, one of the TI ones or something even weirder?
  22. I think that the first one was in the City, but the one I knew was in Baker Street. One visit was more than enough - primarily due to the other patrons, rather than the food.
  23. It was designed to pander to their fantasies! The School Dinnergirls (waitresses) were one its main attractions when it opened (reputedly).
  24. SY cables are the spawn of Satan! Great idea in theory but if you insist on using them, dealing with the steel wire braid is a bit of a problem and really necessitates the use of proper cable glands.
