  12. Not in practice, horrid things that don't fit anywhere, plus I don't have any.
  13. Kitty litter? and ..... To clean engine hole: I have bagged some in my best tights, made about four up from one pair to remove mucky liquids, also used to stop any fuelling spills. Arthur always "goes outside", ?

    Real chips

Yes, of course, but one is pure, t'other has additives which gives it a metalic aftertaste. ... Strangely sweet potato is a veg I don't really enjoy. PS major economy tip @Lidl, get there at 08.00 and get your pick of the individually priced fruit and veg. I am currently proud owner of largest butternut squash in Yorkshire. Roasted, souped, chips? Chutney?
  15. Chances are they were not the ones the examiner was shown. I agree that false certifcates are probably widespread, I did my RYA Yachtmaster in the Solent, one guy got mixed up with deviation, another tried to sail down Ryde High Street, sheets not tied on properly, and losing "man overboard".
  16. Just had my BSS, plus gas work. He explained everything clearly, did the work really well, careful and professional. No hesitation in recommending him. he used to build narrowboats, I bet they were good. jo
  17. He knows than anyone else round here, spends a lot of time working on superyachts, trawlers, etc when he is not training people, running RYA courses, racing motorbikes, and flying light aircraft etc . Maybe 25 years or so in the business of boat electrics/electronics. Nothing special about narrowboats except there are more bodged systems than one would get in any production yachts. I did explain previously, I'll be blunter, the original boat electrics are bodged.
  18. He is not an expert in solar on NBs in UK. He is, however an internationally respected electrical and electronics engineer, RYA examiner and all the rest of it. There will probably not be another person with his experience, other than Gibbo. ..... I am not easily impressed, he is willing to instal whatever I want, but very few of us have an unlimited budget. I want best result for my money, I have pretty much spent up my budget on electrical essentials. Also, I would accept a bit less solar if it looks so much better. My original plan was to get rid of the old solar anyway. I am thinking about connecting a portable solar panel through the existing small controller but using waterproof connectors. I could point it at the winter sun. I came up with the idea of using the existing panels and roof brackets myself! It will look better, and I will propose the idea, see what he says. You have to be awre that he is never going to connect his electrics to anything that might catch fire. Solar panels are cheap, but they need to be fitted. I bought a kit sans brackets, 2 x 275W with matching wiring and controller. I bought 3 x 135 AGM, there are two others in the domestic bank. I have done an audit, near enough my [unlimited] mains usage, though I do use marina washing machine. I might get one of these. https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Battery-Monitor-Voltmeter-Motorhome-Lead-Acid/dp/B07CTKYFTG/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=battery+monitor&qid=1583752041&sr=8-2 I would like to get this https://www.asap-supplies.com/victron-blue-smart-charger-122042022 I don't want the smart part, but it matches my invertor.
  19. I am not sure this is a good idea for the average boater. In this instance the forum gurus have already stepped in to advise. I have gone through four or five people who worked as boat electricians but who were not willing / not capable of fixing my system, yes, you can do it, once, if the existing system is simple and properly installed and you are meticulous, and understand boat construction, materials, electrical systems. The two electricians who have tackled my electrics have had many years of practical marine electrial experience and professional training. They also have the tools, not cheap. The others ran away. I have been learning from books and youtube, but no way could I tackle OPs system, it's not simple. Every boat is bespoke. It's not always a case of just connecting a few wires together. My electrician estimates it will cost £600 in labour to fit a two panel system, materials £625. For him it is two day's work and he can recognise and sort any unsafe/inefficient installation he encounters.

  21. If I want to check battery voltage, I thought I had to turn off charger and let them rest. The electrician is happy with the batteries, and my charge regime. There is such a lot to discuss, designing a better system, without ripping everything out. He is happy to provide ongoing advice and support.
  22. All winter only had the water pump and the radio on 12 volt, everything else : laptop, lights, fridge, kettle, tools, sewing machine are shorepower. I have not used the Webasto or the shower very much, not at all from August to February 14th. The solar has been kicking in as the days lengthen. I judge the SOC by the traffic lights and the voltmeter,
  23. Ask them to replace or refund as they are not fit for purpose. Very annoying.
  24. No, that was the old batteries, they have been removed, the previous owner killed them, some might have been 10 years old. I don't let my domestic bank go under 12.4 I put the 20 amp charger on for an hour if the Webasto has been on.
