  1. Instead of accepting the facts as they are presented is it not permitted to challenge their validity ? I am open to being convinced but it seems you are not.
  2. I don't suppose the Ouse has changed I am struggling to picture what your boat looks like and to understand if it is capable of the journey.
  3. I studied analysis of statistics at A level then again as part of my degree. I recall on the degree we analysed the data in 4 or 5 different ways all of which were proven and accepted as valid. I asked which method we should use in practice . The answer was to use the method that gives the result you prefer to hear . ..... I am doubtful of that electric vehicles are any less polluting than ICE vehicles when everything is taken into account including fuel production (including electricity production) . However I do see the use of electricity for powering vehicles rather than fossil fuels to be a benefit providing the electricity production does not use fossil fuels. Unfortunately electricity does presently require the use of fossil fuels (including nuclear) since fossil fuels are used in the construction and day to day operation of the power station even if not directly as a fuel for driving a generator. The power station near me runs on gas. One of the larger power stations , further North ,runs on bio fuel but that fuel is harvested and transported using fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are used in the production of electric cars not only for the mining of resources including metals , the smelting of steel but also in the production of components such as metals , tyres and paint . I would not doubt electric vehicles will become the norm but I don't think existing ICE vehicles should be forced off the roads (nor should boats be forced off the canals for that matter). It would seem to me environmentally acceptable for existing ICE cars to remain in use without financial tax penalty for as long as people wish to do so. Similarly the pollution from leisure boats must be minimal in the overall scheme of things.
  4. Do you think this winter is going to be less mild ? I cant say I have worried about a holding tank freezing but guess its possible.
  5. The shorter piles appear to be intentional in order to allow a drain (or sewer) pipe to pass through below the bed of the canal. I am surprised the gap around the pipe does not appear to have been sealed in some way other than with clay. A concrete plug with a puddle flange round the pipe and/ or hydrophilic seals might be expected . The concrete could be anchored to the sheet piles using shear studs or the like . None of that sort of engineering seems to have been attempted. There is presumably the same detail on the other side of the canal.
  6. I wouldn't doubt hire companies like electric cars since the downtime for service must be relatively low.
  7. I think these days its more likely an ECU or ABS or such like expensive component or expensive in labour item that sends a car to the scrap yard . Years ago engines were worn out much earlier and body rot was common on cars well under 10 years old. Even heard of cars failing their first MOT on rust . Those days are long gone. The same sort of ABS or other component failure exceeding the market value of the car would render an electric car beyond economic repair. Electric cars presumably rely heavily on electronic components just as much a s modern petrol or diesel. Electronic components don't last forever . Suspension, wheels , steering bodywork and interiors all have a certain life and are no different between electric and petrol/diesel cars . So I don't think the motor being electric necessarily extends the life of a car. Many people don't want a 10 year old car and I don't see that changing . If it does then the car makers should be worried as they rely on people buying new cars every few years .
  8. Alan It would be appreciated if you could please let me know where the 2050 maritime plan or other UK government document indicates that all craft will have to have zero emission propulsion by 2050? I am looking for evidence , a reference for another forum. Leading the way doesn't necessarily mean a ban on pre-existing means of propulsion. Genuine question . .
  9. Okay. But you were wrong about that so maybe the rest is unreliable too . I don't see why cars should last longer because they have an electric motor. I imagine cars are scrapped because some fault is beyond economical repair . That fault may not be an engine wearing out .
  10. That figure appears to be from the USA Whats the relevant figure for the UK?
  11. I the first lockdown we had some poor substitutions from Morrisons. The final straw was we had one bag of things that we had not ordered and other items missing. It was corrected but by refund rather than we would have preferred to receive the goods we had ordered. Sainsburys are more efficient . Not perfect but substitutions are few and , if rejected are corrected by the van driver. We have our delivery slot for just before Christmas booked. Aldi are excellent for wine in the sense of no substitutions and delivered at no cost if the order is over £30. The delivery by Yodel is a little random in that you really only know the delivery time on the day its on the van but tracking of the delivery on the day is accurate. For free delivery who cares .

  13. On the River Trent below Gainsborough bridge , The Humber and The Wash
  14. I have never taken my engines to full revs. May have gone to 3500rpm occasionally . Max is 3900rpm. Mostly cruse at 3200rpm when going fast which is about 22Knots.
  15. Daughter has a Sproker , now about 6 months old. He is more Springer than Cocker . He is a lovely dog but absolutely full of energy, which is nice but he would walk all day long. Really needs more than one person to do the walks. At present he would probably run off if we let him off the lead - needs more training. We haven't introduced him to the boat yet - Covid hasn't helped with that. He is still growing . I would say he will make 20kg.
  16. Where did you get that impression? You can go where you like with an acceptable excuse and providing you don't say away from home overnight . I haven't been far at all but my wife went 20 miles to meet our daughter at a park for a walk . No problem.
  17. Being in a former tier 3 area adjacent a tier 2 area I thought tier 3 was worse than the present lockdown due to the travel restrictions between areas of different tiers .
  18. Could have been some air in the system which has now found its way out. I find air can take a few days use to clear , especially if the boat has been out of use a while. I had a few issues earlier this year and found the tank breather was partial clogged . Once the breather was cleared the problem was solved.
  19. It seems to me doing the ropes , operating a canal boat, going through a lock without moving a muscle might be a bit tricky.
  20. You can exercise or visit outdoor public places with: • the people you live with • your support bubble • when on your own • 1 person from another household. (Children under 5, as well as disabled people dependent on round-the-clock care are not counted towards the limit on two people meeting outside). ''The regulations do not define what exercise is and therefore recreational boating (all forms of watersports practised on open waterways, including sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, rowing, kayaking, surfing, paddle-boarding and the use of privately-owned motorised craft) from a public outdoor space may be possible provided the restrictions for meeting people socially are adhered to.'' https://www.rya.org.uk/newsevents/news/Pages/coronavirus-advice-and-information-for-recreational-boaters.aspx#1 .
