  1. But surely the 50Ah is all we can be sure off. Lets not even go into whether it was drawn over 1 hour or 10. The 75% as you previously said is often a work of fiction so you still cannot accurately calculate the battery bank capacity. Or am I missing something? Please do not misunderstand me, I am very interested in this as my MICC regularly under counts as opposed to what you seem to be suggesting is the usual problem of over counting.
  2. You did, post 24. I've highlighted it once so I'll not bother again. My jibes, and thats all they are, havent been directed at said respected member in the main. But the PC supporters which you are obviously one of.
  3. It would appear he has had plenty of practice by all accounts! ........ eeeee sorry. i'm coming off this thread ........ I'm only here(not hear!) for the boating advise!
  4. Ours smells a little but only when you first enter. In no time it is not noticeable but I guess that depends how sensitive your nose is. I think there will always be a slight smell whether burning, diesel, gas, wood or coal unless the heater is outside of the living area. I appreciate coal and wood smell is more pleasant.
  5. lol! why thank you kind sir! right back at you!
  6. So out of the 1612 greenies how many are actually for public personal character assassination followed by a swift apology? ........ I'm seeing a short cut to catapult myself up the pecking order hear!!
  7. Oh its fully central heated with a 7 day timer but since loosing my china mans hat I remove the chimney and fit a cap during the week. I also got tired of changing the timer settings from working weeks to holidays to spot visits. And if I had a really late night/ early morning I didnt want the heating coming on and waking me at half 7! So just found it easier leaving it off. Need to get myself sorted really! For my secondary system Im thinking blown air from a heat exchanger from the engine. The heat exchanger is £300(10.8kw) but the ducting and insulation is twice as much again!
  8. lol! very true! I dont think any of us do! I didnt bother putting the heating on on the boat Friday night, after it had stood all week, as I went straight to the pub but lived to regret it! Was laid there shivering like a shi***ng dog but too tired to get up and put it on! Whats that all about?! ..... Anyway I'm a little concerned about my pending winter excursion and thinking I need an alternative heating source, maybe blown air, as the aga is relying on too many components, including the inverter, which one of thems bound to fail in the depths of winter!
  9. So he's not learning then?! ......... sorry Alan ........ I dont even know you.
  10. How much!? ....... mind I do like the idea of gravity fed. I'm too reliant on 240V even on my diesel aga.
  11. Its not really that public. It needs pinning! ....... or we keep commenting and make it a hot topic! Yes its plain to see. Even in the short time I've been on.
  12. He's done the minimum he needed to do but I think the greenies are a little over the top! ........ I reckon interflora and a good dinner out are in order!
  13. Yep, the general consensus from other threads recommend before. To do with getting all the nasties out. But also wont it be nice to come back to one less job to do!
  14. Good idea! I'll definitely be pumping it out one way or another. Dropping it in the boats too messy....... Lets see what technical advances are made in the next 4 years!
  15. Jesus I think you need to get out more! ......... Changing the coolant was one of the first jobs I did on my boat. With no indication or even clue as to how much the boat held. I like seemingly the other guys saw no alternative but to crack open the lower skin tank hose and drop it into the bottom of the boat. Obviously after checking the coolant, or should I say neat H2O! would be contained. Once drained there seemed to be a lot in the bottom of the boat but not being a good judge of volume I still had no clue. Yes I could have calculated it but you know how it is, once youve started you think there is no need. Anyway, I had bought two 5 litre containers of red(no worries for 5 years, get in there!) antifreeze thinking twice as much as a car must be about right! .......Oh how wrong was I! I then mixed the antifreeze with water, 50-50 and proceeded to fill the expansion tank which was in the wheelhouse and holds about 2 litres? Then climb down under the wheelhouse, free the bleed nut, keep looking up above the floor boards, once the expansion tank was empty, nipped up the bleed nut, climbed back up into the wheelhouse and repeated the process, and repeated the process, and repeated the process, and repeated the process, etc! Needless to say I had to make another 1 hour round trip to the motor factors and bought another 5 litres of antifreeze, thought thats bound to be enough! ........ oh noooooo! several hours later and another 1 hour round trip to the motor factors out of desperation I bought another 10 litres of antifreeze. Thinking at least I might be able to take the second one back! Oh no it took the lot........ Have you any idea how many times I climbed in and out from under the wheelhouse!!! ...... and how ridiculous I felt thinking the antifreeze mix was going to come rushing out of the bleed nut at any time after only putting around 20 litres in? Anyway in the end it took 50 litres!!! it is now ingrained on my mind, its one of those things you will never forget! .......... I didnt even want to contemplate getting the water out of the bottom of the boat so thought I would console myself with taking her for a spin whilst keeping a close eye on the temperature and coolant level. We set off and all was good. Temperature was rising steadily but nothing to be alarmed at and surprisingly the coolant level was holding. Engine temperature continued rising but coolant level was holding, I was starting to get concerned. The Mrs, who was constantly monitoring the coolant decided she needed a toilet break. A quick glance at the coolant level, all was ok I released her from her post. She cant have even got comfortable when I glanced behind and was horrified to see the expansion tank was empty and the engine temperature was still rising. Fortunately I had a some antifreeze mixture left over which I proceeded to fill back up and return to my station. I hardlies got back to the helm, glanced back and the expansion tank was empty again! Getting a little agitated I was heckling down the boat asking what the hell she was doing and was she not finished yet as I could do with a hand! The smallest things can get so out of hand at times! ........ Anyway the mrs took over the helm while I sorted out the coolant level. It took another expansion tank fill before normal service was resumed and the engine temperature was resumed. I hope I havent broken it!? Anyway just as I was relaxing and returning to the helm before I could do anything we were heading straight for the only overhanging tree on the river, she doesnt usually steer, which scraped down the whole side of the boat and took the china mans hot clean off n straight into the river. Is it only me? Anyway that was the last of that drama. Back on the pontoon and another day as I was sick of the sight of the boat by this time, I set about trying to get the water, because that is all it was, out of the bottom of the boat. I bought one of those drill bit pumps, what a waste of money. I could not get it to work for love nor money. At first I thought it was down to the fact that I was trying to pump the water too high, or maybe I had to prime it first, but no matter what I did I could not get it to work. So decided there was too much to sponge out so bit the bullet and bought a dirty water pump from screwfix. Oh it was great, once I got it primed that was, for about 30 seconds. The problem being it was only any good down to about 50mm. So, it was back to an old hand pump for the last 50mm, which was still a substantial amount followed by sponging for the last bit only to be repeated several times just incase it hadnt been just water. Anyway, apologies I have been no help whatsoever but maybe it will prevent somebody from making the same mistakes, and I made them all. But I am also interested how to make it easier! Oh, and for other novices like me ignore the fill marks on the side of expansion tanks as these seem to be carryover from cars. 50 litres obviously expands a lot more than 10 litres!
  16. Now that idea I like! ?
  17. Thanks for that. Excuse my ignorance but do you have a means of emptying your tank without having the pump running all the time? I appreciate it will be necessary to flush it through all lines but am a bit concerned about the pump running for such a long time.
  18. Hi, I would be grateful for any advise on cleaning the water tank and system in the boat in order to be able to use the water for drinking? The boat stood for a year before we bought it and maybe another year prior. Up until now, 1 year ownership, I havent bothered as we have only used the boat on weekends and only once for a two week trip so have made do with bottled water for drinking but as I am planning several months CC'ing I would prefer to be able to drink the water direct from the tank....... or should I say tap! I have read several threads on here relating to water filters but dont think that is viable at the moment as after my several months CC'ing I will have to go back to work and revert to infrequent trips and even installing such a system I would imagine it will be necessary to cleanse the whole system first. Thanks in anticipation. John Oh, I should add the boat has a stainless steel tank and it is 9 years old.
  19. Thanks for that Dalslandia ......... you can go off people you know!
  20. and that is all I am asking. All views, opinions and experiences and very much appreciated.
  21. Thought I had one but unfortunately not! I'll see what I can do. I had no intentions of compromising the brackets other function. 4"!? That's something else I surprised at as the inlet is very small. From memory little more than 1". If you are thinking cool air is not a concern maybe I can just rotate the whole unit. I don't have any problems with air intake noise. Do you have a supercharger on yours? wow! guess I have nothing to worry about!
  22. Hi All, its me again! Whilst changing my gearbox recently ....... or should I say helping a friend ....... ok, I was making the tea! ...... I noticed that the air filter intake seemed to be in a ridiculous place, partially masked by a bracket which had been fitted, believe it or not to support the air filter and other items, gearbox and engine oil extraction pumps. I'm tempted to cut the bracket away in order to avoid the restriction and fit a short pipe to the intake leading to an area of cooler and cleaner air. Do you think this would be wise or do you think I am being a little anal and should just leave it vacuuming all the crap up that settles on the bracket. Not to mention the hot air it is breathing from all the metal in such close proximity? Thanks in anticipation.
  23. that would be a first! ........ but totally agree! ....... with my limited experience I believe it to be just right ....... but of course time will tell ...... when I m getting washed out to sea whilst crossing the Wash!
