    JP/JK pulley

How, and to which side of the flywheel does it attach?
  2. The oil pressure sender is likely to be a cheap place to start, but i do wonder if this engine is one that should be run on mineral oil. If it is designed to use a more modern oil i am sure that may be responsible.
  3. It was one of the narrow boats that i referred to, number 17 counting down.
  4. One of the fire damaged craft has a very unfortunate name, warm glow!!

    JP/JK pulley

How do you attach a pulley to the front of the flywheel? Mine is at the back, meaning i have to use link belting and is also prone to any oil leakage.

  8. I identified this problem by disconnecting the alternator after charging the battery, it's worth taking a terminal off the battery beforehand to avoid any flashing over when removing the wires from the alternator.
  9. I am not with my son on the boat at the moment but got him to charge and then remove the wire, and then take a multi meter reading across the +/- terminals on the alternator. He had a reading of equivalent battery voltage, i assume that isn't correct?
  10. The underwater parts look untouched but the counter looks flatter than the original, the upsweep on town class boats being minimal to start with. I don't like it as it gives the illusion that the counter is sloping backwards, and coupled with the flat cabin profile really spoils the lines of this craft. From the pictures it looks like nearly all the knees will require attention in the future.
  11. Yes, we bought the boat a few weeks ago. It has been laid up for about seven years and i believe has remained an unfinished project throughout its existence since 1992! The situation is complicated by a large built in petter generator (defunct) with a shared start/control panel. The only functional item on this panel is a start button but this only operates the starter motor. I don't believe the wires are particularly new, possibly the wire in question may have been connected to the panel in the past and bodged at some stage. I should be able to rig up something along these lines. A new battery was fitted just prior to identifying the fault and is still fine, the previous near new one appears to have survived without any lasting damage after a good charge, fortunately.
  12. Thanks No switch or indicator lamp, just a wire from terminal to battery. I didn't like the look of it, and my multi meter shows the equivalent battery voltage when put on the alternator terminals with engine off.
  13. I only checked the temperature when running, but the battery would be entirely flat by morning unless the alternator was disconnected. Thanks for the feedback. The electrics are generally quite shaky, i have improved and simplified all standard connections but know little about the correct way of wiring an alternator - not guilty of the current set up!
  14. I have discovered that the alternator on my son's boat is emptying the battery once the engine is stopped, an odd fault that i haven't come across before. Someone on our travels suggested that a defective diode was the likely cause, is this a straightforward fix or best left to a professional? It appears to charge perfectly, especially considering the low rpm of the engine. I have attached a picture of the connections, it appears that the previous owner has used two wires for both positive and negative feeds with the fifth cable going from the central spade connector to the live terminal of the battery.

  17. Thanks for the info, much appreciated.
  18. Can anyone tell me where the nearest available fuel is, south of soulbury three locks? My son has run out, seemingly due to being siphoned off by someone.

    Lister SR2 problems

It's a difficult one, i have only come across that sort of volume being used when there has been major issues with the breather system, often compounded by a generally tired engine. I'm not overly familiar with the Sr2 but assume it has some form of crankcase ventilation?

    Lister SR2 problems

I'm only going by the information supplied by the OP, but it does seem a lot. The blue smoke would worry me, as some of the most terminal motors i've seen generally produce something more like steam from the filler cap. My sister had an Austin 1100 which stopped running when you removed the cap but ran perfectly with it in place!

    Lister SR2 problems

Visible blue smoke from the oil filler cap on any engine is normally a bad omen, and up to a litre of oil in a couple of hours is likewise - unless there is a pool of it under the motor.
  24. Thanks The wharf is long gone, it would appear to have been filled in some time after 1938 according to maps of the area. What was the wharf now constitutes the land against which boats would be moored, as inferred in the OP.
  25. If the throttle linkage is similar in design to a Honda, take care if you strip it down. There are minute springs and it is not entirely obvious how it goes back together...Don't ask me how i know.
