  1. The best way I can describe it is its like emulsion paint in that any water thats about mixes with the Keelblack and then dries off. Its not like any other bitumen I've used. It is water based and water soluble product but it dries like a super hard normal bitumen.
  2. Keelblack can and does go on a wet boat, I know because I did mine wet.
  3. I did my boat with it. Superb stuff. Price per litre is similar to other bitumens but it does go twice as far. So defo much cheaper overall. It also can be put on a wet boat and dries quickly so you can do one coat then then start over again straight away.
  4. Try "Builders oak" in Daventry. Excellent to deal with. I bought superb unfinished oak faced ply from them last year.
  5. Looks like 2 boats in the lock have some forst hand knowledge of whats happened. Looks like they were coming up as its happened.
  6. Having read some articles on the net it seems that inserting a low lying loop in the feed hoses to and from the engine should stop the thermo syphon. Fyi currently hoses go from engine straight to the calorifier on a slight downward incline. I've also bought a timer that I'll install. So now back to the original post, eliminating the immersion I'm using 2 kwh per day. Am I right that I will therefore need 2000÷10=200 amp hours from my battery bank ? So what would be 1. ideal number of trojans T105's? 2. How many hours of 70 amp altetnator to put 200 amp hours back. Is it 200÷35 = 5.7 hrs ?
  7. Well I have now done some expermenting and have found that 80% of the power consumption is the Immersion heater. Also I believe much of that power is because the tank is also heated by the engine and on checking the engine bay I found the cold engine is being heated by the hot water tank. I assume that the engine coil in the hot water tank is being heated and by convection the hot water is circulating around the engine. Looks like there are two pipes on the engine block, an out and return that attach to the coil in the tank. So how do I stop the convection induced circulation which is wasting loads of heat to the engine bay ?
  8. Hi folks, very inteŕesting replies, thank you. more info We are averaging 10 kwh per day with immersion on washing machine 2 x per week with drier occassiobally maybe on aveage 1 per week. No excessive shower use. Tank is insulated but not very good, I will see if I can source an over jacket to fit to teduce heat losses.
  9. Hi folks I really appreciate all the replies, and will take heed of the comments when i get back on board. For now though I am on a 'meter maid' that shows ive used 100 kWh in 10 days. Immersion is on 24/7 as is fridge, freezer and inverter charger. Domestic is 4 trojans. I wont be using the immersion when out on the cut as will be moving everday exploring the whole network.
  10. I am currently on shore power and we are consuming about 100 kwhrs per week. Immersion heater fridge and freezer plus others. We will be off cruising soon and need to plan ahead for that power wise. We will of course switch of the immersion heater. So my question is how do I use current info of 100 kwh per week to work out how many amp hrs per week I will need when out on the cut.
  11. Just a daft idea....Is the pump fitted in correct flow orientation ? ie have you got it fitted such that the outlet is trying to pump against a non return valve (NRV)
  12. On the basis that respirators used in areas where noxious gases exist they put activated carbon as main filter method to remove them allowing you to breathe. I woulđ suggest crushing up some charcoal and putting it in some old tights and leave it there to absorb the smells. It should draw the smells out of where they are and help deal with any new ones that are created.
  13. Thanks for the posts folks, I thought the same and thus booked the service visit to replace the thermostat which was done by Belling engineer. After the repair I checked the gas mark settings vs actual temperature achieved and its all spot on. But the real use of the oven is really bad. Eg I make my own pizza's from scratch. Normally takes 12mins but in ours it took 30 mins and still wasnt cooked in the middle. Door seal is good so I really dont know what the troble is.
  14. Brilliant help folks really appreciated.
  15. Cheers Neil, good call have looked at chandlers and whats on offer isnt very impressive. Still looking for a recommendation to help.
  16. The oven on our boat is just not performing well enough despite having a service by maker (model belling xou60lpg) It takes ages to cook anything and even then its not properly cooked. I suspect its just a poor low quality product. Do you have any experience and recommendations of a decent oven, my wife is a great cook/chef and is at her wits end trying to cope and wants it gone and a new one installed.
  17. Big help thanks have ordered imray guide online. Cheers.
  18. Next year we would like to get over to the river lark area and just found this useful GOBA LINK http://www.goba.org.uk/main.php?section=The_Great_Ouse|Cruising_Info It is interactive and should show amongst other things 'water points'. However none show up, is that true or is it just a website fault ?
  19. Well we managed it and have now been living onboard a since 1st July. Out cruising the batteries drop to around 78% overnight with 240v freezer and 12v fridge on. Fridge will be replaced with 240v as it currently struggles to get to correct temp its on max and still only gets down to 10c. We are loving it........
  20. As always on here extremely useful real experience and helpful info. Looks like we have several options and can decide as the whim takes us. Thank you all for you're posts.
  21. We are about to venture down the South Oxford from Braunston and want to go into Oxford and moor up in the centre for a day or two. Then we need to wind and go back up the South Oxford to Braunston. Would appreciate any advice on moorings and winding, maybe need to go onto the Thames ?.
  22. If I have broken an unwritten rule then I do sincerely apologise but there in lies the problem how on earth is anyone supposed to know these unwritten 'common sense' rules, in my case it seemed it was ok for me to move on and be replaced by another which seemed to be rather spurious.
  23. Regarding mooring in the stretch of canal between locks 1 and 2 at Braunston. We were assisting a friend in dry dock at UCCC and moored in the above. Not causing any problem at all and clearly with the right to stay there for 14 days (correct ?). Volunteer lockie "advised us" it was restricted mooring area and wanted us to move on. We declined and were given some boll×x about IF 2 70 footers came down as 2 70 footers came up it could cause trouble. He also advised that it was ok for another noat to moor in our place as they were going into dry dock next morning. Note my mates boat would be coming out to allow that one in. So ok for him to moor but not us argument. I told him we would be moving following morning anyway. Then some 4 hours later 2 came up and 1 asked "do you have plans to move sir ?" Isaid "no" then added "but we will be leaving tomorrow" and was given a very sarcastic reply of "then you do have plans sir". We were moored at total of 3 days only. Left a bad taste what a pair of jumped up little ar$eholes.
