  1. My advice is stay with the current insurers unless their quote is unacceptable to you. Depending on the age of the boat a new insurer may require to see your recent survey or have one carried out. Edited to add that we use Nautical too.

  3. I would hook up as this, in my opinion ,is best for batteries. The GI is looking after your steel as best it can with help from your anodes
  4. Omg someone advertised the dark side, I need a cup of ribena!!
  5. Mike I see your comment as a valuable inclusion rather than identifying a problem, makes sense too, have a virtual greenie from my iPhone !
  6. The Boaters Handbook Keep your speed down when you're approaching bridges, locks, bends or junctions, and when passing other boats or anglers. I don't see the problem in following that. So, with good mooring and considerate passing boaters life is a dream. If you want to go fast I suggest those signs are meant for you. The problem is fast is relative. Many who pass me are on tickover and their tickover has been set such that the lowest speed may be a tad more than yours/mine, hence the angst from some. I just ignore them as life is too short. Those who know they are being knobs and persist are just part of life's rich tapestry and I do hope they hit a nice concrete shelf.
  7. I pass on tickover every time then there can be no complaint - at least none that will stand water!. I am not in a hurry and I like to give all moorers the benefit of the doubt in terms of mooring capability re lines. I not recommending this, I am not paid to, it's just what I do
  8. My argument is that your statement is wrong. "A number if canal related websites" and all you come up with is the social pariah Facebook. Life is too short to name and shame or sit idly on a computer wandering around Facebook looking for canal related whingers.
  9. I tend to only use the upper Trent so will test on that first in terms of depth and length required to achieve a hold from the anchor, rope is cheap so will leave my order as is for now, but thanks for the observation.
  10. Alan, Very helpful. I have 5 metres of chain but have just now ordered 15 metres of 16mm rope. Good advice re locking to boat and that's already sorted. Never deployed the anchor before so I have decided to do some controlled testing. At least then I will be prepared.
  11. First of all, excellent sharing of what I am sure was a very stressful time. Secondly, and apologies if the answer is obvious. What size rope/chain, in terms of length, should one carry to make sure an anchor drag on the river bed is possible on the Trent?
  12. There is a well low bridge on the Ashton flight by the velodrome, so low I hit my forehead on it and was nearly knocked out, sorry I cannot be more precise on location but it was metal bridge - no idea re airdraft

  14. We ended up selling a property ( enforced by employer re-location) and being out of pocket by 20% of the original purchase price, it took us 7 years to get back on our feet. Negative equity hit is hard.
  15. Speak to Justin from aqua Narrowboats re sponsored boats. He will advise on returns for a boat sponsored by you and managed by his company. Google. Aqua Narrowboats - I have no commercial or other interest
  16. I would want to ensure that the shell, howsoever constructed, or re-constructed is surveyed and the surveyors report is not qualified through lack of access, blacking making assessment impossible etc. From experience, make it politely clear to the surveyor what you are expecting and do what you can to ensure full acces. Always provide instructions in writing as this helps the surveyor understand exactly what you want done. In addition, if you want a detailed engine check, say so, it's worth it - usually. Happy hunting.
  17. It's very important to pre heat the oil used and the recommended oil for wok frying is one with a high smoke point like peanut oil. We use two burners and place the wok accordingly. The other optopn is to part pre cook the chicken if you cannot gat the temperature you need which, if you use the right oil should not really occur, so long as you give it long enough to heat up
