  1. But your response (at least on this date) shows you are not... Give it another few months when Bot's and AI give a credible "I'm outraged that you've blocked me" and we have a problem
  2. To quote a recent security conference I attended "This is a game of chess where only one side knows they are playing" Those who are testing the water with AI are well aware of what they are doing and why. There may (repeat may, repeat may) come a day when AI can respond in a useful manner to "why will my Lister JP 3 not start, it's got petrol and everything?" but that day is [IMHO] a (very) long way off. On the other side there are an awful lot of people (including me) who use the forum to swap views with other humans - we generally accept that other humans may be wrong, biased (or misguided) and don't understand [nor want to] how AI and Large Language Models work. The Mod's originally joined up to stop the odd prolific user of bad language, those who seek to use the forum as a free market place (not always for canal related products) and the occasional person-on-person abuse. We've recently had what appears to be a glut of overseas posters who are heavy on words, light on information. We (the Mods) think that the forum would be better place for not being a playground for teaching AI how to be better at being human.
  3. Give Jen a break (please) Some of the recent posts have been nearly a whole screen of information maybe contributing "be careful while charging Lead Acid" or "be sure your boat has dimensions suitable for the waterway". One or two have mentioned salt water (when the original poster made it clear they were on fresh) etc. Such posts dilute the genuine membership and their opinions. The "Accept the T's and C's" (which I've only had to do once, over three devices) is a way of easing the Mod's job - it's not "we don't like what you are posting", it's "you are breaking the T's and C's"
  4. Electra I've been on it - sneaking up on a Heron (and then cruising past without spooking it) was amazing
  5. Thanks - I will be very careful of my eyesight; I value it too much! Welder arrives tomorrow, mask and gloves today, fluxed wire on Thursday. All bought with the plan that if I don't like it, I change the wire and add a gas bottle... The MIG inverter will drive a stick (with an electrode holder) Both done... The only thing I shall be disappointed with is my own skill...

  8. So, I've finally managed to add over 350 comments to the album and move 343 images into a category. There are a few more "awaiting developments" where I've had suggestions and "but so and so might know more...". Particular thanks to @Stroudwater1 for many and detailed comments and to @John Brightley and others who commented on my web site. Which is kind of handy as any day I'm expecting delivery of the next 1,200 or so images on USB stick and @magpie patrick tells me he's got the next 1,400 or so ready for the post. Which will push us towards 2,700 or so or about 5% of the journey....

  10. I would but the thread has grown in 47 minutes - merge (and some editing) coming up!
  11. Thanks all - I'll maybe buy the "MIG" welder and a reel of flux cored wire* - If I get on with it then I've got the regulator and bits for when/if I want to go MIG. If I don't get on then I've only wasted the cost of a reel of wire when I switch to gas. [ * - plus, obviously, the safety equipment ]
  12. Thanks - I'll have a look I know the local landlady very well - I'll have words, thank you. Thanks

  14. This isn't to build or maintain a boat - but it could be! If I'm wrong, report it and I'll get it moved... I learnt to stick weld when I first started work, the company believed in a wide experience so my first three months saw working in a sawmill, sheet metal, paint shop, PCB manufacture, conformal coating, metal (and plastic) turning etc. In those days MIG was not a thing. I've now got a lot of small jobs in the garden such as bird tables, hanging baskets, seats and tables. Individually I'd bodge with self tappers and cable ties but I'm tempted (I like toys!) with a small welder such as the R-Tech 180A. I know I'll need a mask and gauntlets but the gas supply has me stumped. I used to SCUBA dive - our tanks were rated by capacity at ambient pressure (also known as "water capacity" or WC) and a rated pressure - example, a 12l tank at 200 bar was 2,400 litres of usable air. MIG tanks are "different" - The most common seem to be "disposable" weighing around 4kG and holding 60 litres of 86% Argon / 14% CO2. At the quoted rate for a MIG torch (15l/min) they last around four minutes - that seems awfully bad for the environment (and my wallet!) - throwing 1 kG of steel in the bin every 60 seconds! Are there more sensible options for MIG - or should I revert to Stick Welding?

  20. Orkney... When we got the late ferry to Kirkwall from Aberdeen, I always ended up driving the minibus (12 SCUBA divers plus kit) the last few miles from Kirkwall to Stromness - that sign (just after Finstown) was the signal to ring the skipper and get him to get the kettle on! (Given it was over eight miles off the main drag - we always wondered if they kept the sign just for tourists...)
  21. See Ofcom Guidance as linked to by Jen - "The moderators have a liking for OFCOM's research on acceptable language in broadcasting." - You may (or may not) find it offensive - I may (or may not) find it offensive. Tw@t is in the "moderate" category from Ofcom which I treat as "depending on context" (and thanks for the side discussion while I was typing on the merits of Tw@ versus Tw@t) From a personal perspective (not as a Mod) the forum would improve if language was kept reasonable - there are other, less offensive words than S#!t for what comes out of a pump out; use them!
