  1. The danger from Bees wasps and ants is minimal most of the time! I have never heard of insects "sting the skin off " anyone. The only real danger is anaphylaxis which is pretty rare. If you take the time to understand what the insects are about then you don't need to "sting" ( euphamism for kill I presume ) them.
  2. I have been really saddened by the tone of this thread. The hymenoptera, bees wasps and ants , are a huge group of insects that are an essential part of our wildlife fauna. I thought that living close to nature on a canal would make people more sympathetic to these occasionally annoying insects. I always have a wasp nest somewhere in or around our house. They like to go under the floorboards in the front room but the attic and outside sheds are also favourite. The last time I was stung by a wasp was about thirty years ago. If you don' t flap about then they ignore you. I have had two hornet nests inthe garden and they were brilliant, watching them patrolling the hedges looking for food. I did get stung a few times when i foolishly tried to find the entrance to the nest in a dead stump but a hornets sting is less than a wasp or bee and soon faded. As for spending £40 on pest control, as a lady in our village did, is simply a waste of money. Just wait to the end of the year and they abandon the nest.
  3. For ownership of land I think you need to have registered interest in ownership for 12 years. I am sure I heard of people putting up signs on plots of land claiming ownership and coming back after 12 years. A right of way ( easement ) is 20 years, I know that to my cost.
  4. Remember the state bird in minnesota is the mossie! They eat you alive around the lakes in the summer.
  5. So when will, if ever, this lead to a petrol engine IN a narrowboat?
  6. Found this on a photography web site discussing various aspects of copyright. Chris October 31, 2012 at 12:35 pm Hi Linda, I was wondering if you could help me please? I am in my final year of a BA (hons) photography degree, for my dissertation I writing about the current attitudes towards photography, and incidents where photographers – who are seemingly within rights to photograph – are being told they cannot! I have many articles that reference the right to photograph in public spaces etc, but I cannot find the actual legislation that relates to this. Any help you can give me on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Chris REPLY Linda Macpherson December 31, 2012 at 6:04 am Sorry Chris, this answer is more than a little late for you! I get asked this quite a lot, but the fact is that there isn’t really any legislation that relates specifically to photography (with exception of legislation controlling indecent images of children and the by-laws prohibiting commercial photography without a permit in places like Trafalgar Square and the Royal Parks). Instead the reasons for restricting photography or the use to which photographs can be put come within a plethora of other laws (statutory and common-law) that are aimed at a much wider range of behaviours than merely photography. e.g. The Terrorism Act 2000 (as amended), the Human Rights Act 1998, The Data Protection Act 1998, the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 and the common law of trespass (and, in Scotland, breach of the peace) are all frequently cited as reasons for preventing photography. And while all of them may affect the right to photograph or to publish photographs in some circumstances, none of them expressly prohibit photography in general. And they are not infrequently mis-used, by security guards, PCSOs and sometimes the police, as reasons for telling people that they cannot take photographs even when they legally can. So it seems there isn't a specific law about commercial use of photographs after all.
  7. Are you sure? Calenders etc often have scenes with mixed content such as houses, cars people etc and I am sure they do no seek the permission of all th various owners.
  8. I've told you before "Don't call me Shirley!" Is Lowestoft still in Suffolk? Don't get me started.
  9. "Ooo look there goes Concorde". John Peel. RIP
  10. I am new to boating....Is this all true? Or are you aving a larf?
  11. Still happening in Portsmouth in the eighties, there was an outside tannery under Copner Bridge. Very smelly!
  12. We're currently fitting out a 54 metre long, 6metre wide Dutch cargo barge, to a mid/ high end spec, and are looking at around £100k all in. Admittedly, a smaller team (2-3 people at different stages, all skilled craftsmen, and me making the tea) and a much longer project (roughly 3 years from shell to home). It surprises me that narrowboats are so very different to this. It's no wonder so many boat builders go out of business with margins like this!
  13. Sorry -should I just go to Whilton boats and buy the first blue boat I can find?
  14. 65 ft boat diesel generator, diesel stove and diesel engine does it still have a standard tank? Seemed a valid enquiry.
  15. I found that also. They were happy to explain how the shelves in the cupboard came out, whoopee! But if you asked them the size of the engine or fuel tank they looked at you with that "stop showing off " expression. A bit patronising.
  16. Not if CRT were in charge!
  17. Shame the same laws don't apply to cats yet.
  18. You are right some cats are uninterested in wildlife but unfortunately there are many others that spend every night out hunting and killing. In a recent survey of all the cats in a village the average number of kills per cat was 50 per year. Thats a lot of Barn Owl food!
  19. Doe this mean you can only have a shower when the sun shines?
  20. Stove type isn't fundamental but Ally had mentioned builds where no stove was on the list at all! However I still can't decide between a solid fuel or diesel stove. The fundamental bits are at the front of my list and if you think I am going to tell you what they are you've got another thing coming.
  21. Skill or lack of it is irrelevent. A maker of paint and brushes can not lay claim to the works of constable! It is only the image that is copyright not things used to make it.I took some photos of houses in our village and made them into postcards and sold them. One of the house owners claimed he had copyright on his house? I looked into this and was told that unless he was the first person to create a timber framed house he could not claim copyright. On the other hand a sculptor I had photographed in the blacksmiths workshop did have copyright.
  22. Wasps are NOT pointless! They eat lots and lots of insects including midges, or maybe you prefer them?
