  1. I had a quick flick through the Times article when I was meant to be putting the papers together at work. It was a list of the '30 top canal locations.' I know these things are always a matter of opinion but this one seemed especially arbitrary, with a southern bias. I can't remember the details, but the ones near the top seemed to be flights I hadn't even heard of, and the Anderton and Falkirk lifts were both well down it. As Dyertribe says, sparse and uninspiring.
  2. Last weekend I viewed a boat that has self pump-out. The vendor said he uses it to decant into a container and then empty that down the Elsan point. Now, I admit to being a newbie with a lot to learn, and I am a Bear of Very Little Brain at the best of times, but I seem to be missing something here.I thought the whole point of Pump Out was to avoid carrying containers of your poo along the tow path and to obviate the need for storing empty cassettes. His system seems to be the best of both worlds. Does anyone on here have an SPO? What's your MO?
  3. There are similar rules which affect those in private rented accommodation. Age and family size dictate how many bedrooms you are deemed to need and a fair rent figure is asribed to each size of dwelling. I forget the precise figures (and I think it depends where you live), but it is something like £400 pcm for a 1 bedroom property and £750 for a three bedder roudn here (East Cheshire). I imagine most people's mooring+licence fees would come under those ceilings and if not, I think they pay up to the ceiling.
  4. An ex-local writes: it is River Asland or Douglas - no T.
  5. The Macc already has mile posts (stone ones). Not all of them are legible though.
  6. I think I read it in a bus enthusiast magazine when the new system was first launched. It might have been an educated guess by them, come to think of it.
  7. Dave P beat me to it with the current number plate system. I belive that T has also been used for some Scottish registrations. Some of the descriptions seem to have changed since they first came out. D was originally Offa's Dyke, V was Vale of Evesham. There doesn't seem to be an official reason for using K for Borehamwood and Northampton, but Knowhere Exciting has been suggested!

    Advice

To get to Bosley, come down the A523 from Hazel Grove. Go straight through Macclesfiled following A523 Leek - do NOT follow Congleton! After about 4½ miles you come to traffic lights (Bosley Crossroads). Turn right (A54 Congleton) and you cross the canal after about a mile. But, thinking about it, Marple locks would be much closer for you!
  9. No, just happen to live in Macc and was trying to think up a snappy user ID in a hurry!
  10. Newbie here, so I hope you don't mind me adding my two penn'orth. I'm local to Bollington so I nipped up to Adelphi Mill this evening to take a look. The boat that's for sale is the one that appears in the top most photo i.e. short cratch, windows fore and aft and a central porthole. There are a couple of day boats there as per the lower pictures i.e one normal window and two roll-up ones. I should add that although The Duck shows this as a private sale, the contact details are actually for Bollington Wharf. Ricco, if you are thinking of taking a look at this boat, then the 392 bus from Stockport to Bolly is a beautiful route meandering through the back lanes and criss-crossing the canal. If you caught it, then you'd have had a lovely ride even if the boat turn out to be no good!
