  7. All my boats have been 24vdc.........ain't I smug ???
  8. And now on the canal, do you,use oil lamps for lighting.? Each to his or her own, but as mentioned above mains electrical appliances are cheaper more reliable than dc equivalents. Why would you not embrace new world technology ?
  9. Just to add. Take the input air from outside the boat via a skin fitting, don't take air direct from the engine bay.

  12. For the years I've lived onboard yes, a horse could pull my boat...We are canal boat dwellers, not North Atlantic sailors.. Imagine the cost of that stuff and if Victron are involved double your first guess, I could buy a shed load of diesel for my inefficient engine running regime for what I expect to pay for that stuff. Plus I have all the ac comforts including coffee maker, washing machine, kettle etc etc. It's a good gimmick but not I feel for the Inland waterway user.
  13. Seems that I have already a junior version of this stuff. read Nigel's book chapters 5, 6 and 7, but specifically page 71 The Diesel/Electric Boat. My junior version works for me with all alarms and bells, Canal boaters have for years used their engine to charge batteries and give ac voltage, nothing new there for us !!!
  14. Well no.... ones related to running aground, while the others to do with trains ?

  16. I did..... Me!!! , and We concluded in the scheme of things that fitting or not fitting an articulated rudder would make no difference to the chance pick up of canal bed objects around the stern gear.
  17. Humm, it seems to my mind that given the drawings and photos of the articulation that the extension to the Skeg, necessary for the articulation to work would go some way in protection of the unit.
  18. I hardly consider a narrowboat based articulated rudder "over complicated", but I guess each to his own. For a long as we are blessed with "constant moorers" who are now utilising the "free space" in a winding hole I would rather not have to perform a 19 point turn running the risk of waking them up, or worse touching their boat, I think the "complicated, rudder has merit.
  19. On the next dry docking I'm thinking to install an articulated rudder. IM given to understand that such a device can greatly reduce the boats turning circle, plus assist in close manoeuvres with and alongside onther vessels. Has anyone here installed such a rudder, or, have any experience with them ?
  20. You can try "penetrant dye test" on the welds, or a Ultra sonic weld test. Either of which would confirm any weld defects. the boat will need to be lifted out of the water to complete.
  21. Middlewich then hopefully, up to York and Ripon.. And you ?
  22. Catweasel.. I passed you at Parbold yesterday..
