  1. Thank you for the comprehensive reply. I have previously read some of the newsletters which I found both enjoyable and informative. As soon as I get access to a printer the cheque for membership will be in the post. Whilst I am no engineer I would have to agree and say they are a fine bit of craftsmanship.
  2. I hope I don’t live to regret it but my daughter has just set up a Facebook account for me! Once again thank you got the information.
  3. Athy many thanks for that. My father was in the textile business in Manchester before we moved to Ireland in the 60’s and when I mentioned the Gardner engine to him he said they were highly regarded engines back in the day.
  4. Joe thank you for that information. I have never had a Facebook account though I may now reconsider that decision for such matters.
  5. From tomorrow I will be responsible for the care of a Gardner 3L2 engine in our NB. I am about to join the Gardner engine forum but have seen reference to a Gardner Owners Club. I can find no trace of a Gardner Owners Club on the internet so am I right to assume they are one and the same? The original engine was made in 1932 so is 2 years younger than my elderly father who remembers Gardner engines in busses and lorries around Manchester. Any further suggestions for a bit of light reading (if there is such a thing lol) would be appreciated.
  6. With an unbelievable statement (admission) like that I can see the US law firms already rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect of litigation by the ‘victims’. It’s going to cost someone a fortune in damages never mind what was done to the two boats.
  7. Interesting. I bought a house in NI in 2004. By 2007 it had increased in value by 100%. Step forward the financial crash and the house is down 50% so in effect I am back to where I started. I’m not bothered as the house is Home not an investment. However the people who bought in 2007 are down 50% and in substantial negative equity. Yhey cant sell therefore can’t move or in effect change jobs if it isnt local. Now that’s what I call a liability. I have just spent a substantial amount of money (to me) on a Narrowboat. I will possibly/potentially lose money on this in the long run through depreciation but I couldn’t care less. I will be enjoying the fruits of my labour. You have to make the most of life as you are a long time dead. Treating life as a financial spreadsheet seems a waste to me.
  8. That is truly terrifying though I must admit to smiling as they jumped overboard. I wonder what the outcome was for the offending skipper.
  9. If you are a 3 customer 100gb on homefi for £28p - excludes London and other areas not listed though 100gb unlimited mins unlimited texts £20pm The above deals are subject to 12 month contracts and are available for a few quid more if non 3 customers Apologies just noticed you asked for pay as you go
  10. Well that’s good enough for me! Off to Amazon I go for when we get onboard. Grateful for your efforts.
  11. I think you may be right. Me getting confused again. Just swap PayPal for eBay lol. off now so I don’t distract from the thread
  12. Yes he and another chap. It’s where he got his first billions from when he got out of it.
  13. Absolutely correct and nothing wrong with having some pride in ones possessions lol
  14. You would think that if Elon Musk can invent a rocket that re lands in a vertical position after delivering a payload into space or manufacturing Tesla that he could have designed software which identifies such scams when he set up eBay.
  15. It was on here in the ‘for sale’ section where I first saw mention of her. Yes the engine is 2 years younger than my elderly father. I intend joining as having seen one in the flesh I’m hooked. Here is a quirk, I have a dreadful memory but I seem to recall a magazine article featuring ‘eclipse 2’ which was a Hudson with a Gardner LW engine. Would you be the (polishing) star of that article. If so it’s spooky how I can remember that whilst forgetting lots of other things. That’s the one lol
  16. The ‘journey’ may have taken over 5 years but we are now the proud owners of a NB. Nellie No1 is a 70’ Trad by the Warwickshire Fly Boat Company with a Gardner 3L2 engine. it will be a fortnight before we get onboard but I am truly looking forward to the next stage.
  17. Thank you. My wife got the 100GB homefi deal yesterday in NI. The salesman warned the wife about this issue and told her to ring 3 when set up and for them to cap the account at 100GB of data for this very reason
  18. Gentlemen thank you for your replies. Perhaps I should stick with the regular process until I understand more lol
  19. I am considering having the 2 pack epoxy system for our NB Hull. I have read that there is a new process whereby an alternative product to grit/sand is used in the blasting process which is kinder to the hull. Due to my cognitive issue I cannot remember where I read about it, what it is called and which company offers this service. I know debdale marina use the grit blasting process and spray molten metal. can anyone assist with refreshing my memory and any other views on my thoughts?
  20. I was getting carried away a little. I have EE and the wife has 3 so I think I will now keep it that way. I hope to do some extended cruising round the system so hopefully we will get a signal between the two of us lol.
  21. Thank you all for the info and suggestions. I didn’t realise that you could power the Home-fi router via 12v so that’s even better. So the 3 Home fi route it is. The 100GB data deal is not available in all areas e.g London. In those areas I believe you are limited to 40GB. Fortunately I live in NI so I suspect the 100GB will be available. I may also buy the mi-fi and swap the SIM card between the two for comparison purposes.
  22. As we prepare for our new (to us) boat I am looking at on board wi-fi. As we hope not to spend too much time at our home in NI I was considering cancelling our BT broadband and line rental. The wife and I have mobiles with lots of data so was going to replace the broad band with a 3 homefi with a large data allowance for when we are home and taking it on the boat when cruising using the onboard 240v via inverter. The alternative is to get a 3 mi-fi, again with a large data allowance. What are the esteemed members view on the above and am I missing something obvious?
  23. Now that is a suggestion which I support wholeheartedly. Sadly it’s far too sensible for it to be implemented by the powers that be and the ‘I’m alright Jack’ brigade.
  24. Trust me it does! In about 1990 I had just settled the financial side of my divorce including our property in London. Basically I bought her half then the market crashed. Talk about timing lol I fully agree about a housing crash even though I own a property. Not everyone wants to purchase a property but it does allow those who do to get on board. There are many people who for their own circumstances prefer to rent.
