  1. If that is so then 40% of them are not ? I suspect that any of the half decent UK holiday towns have a high proportion of second homes, but when you bring the static caravans into the equation it starts to look a bit silly. Either way the "real" locals were not impressed.
  2. But on what basis can you justify that and not give similar exemptions to holiday home owners. How do you police it anyway? It would not be fair to pass that particular buck on to marina staff and I am not sure residential communities would be too happy either.
  3. Know what you mean but Southwold (amongst other resorts down here) was well over-run and to the point that the town centre was busier than the peak holiday season. It was an incredible occurrence that was incredibly stupid. I think they almost took the law into their own hands but Govt clarification re second homes did have a beneficial effect fortunately. The Snowdon fiasco was beyond belief as was the case with the Brecons.
  4. I think it's a bit like that in Southwold, Suffolk (my home county). If they see someone who looks remotely like a second home/caravan owner they let the dogs out ?
  5. We can agree to disagree, in part anyway. In an ideal world what you say would be true but I doubt it will work that way in reality. There will be those who will use it as an excuse to visit the boat and spend leisure time on it whilst using the local services outside the marina. It is easy enough to find a few jobs to do, after all its a boat. And as you say some keep their boats far from home. Our's is a two hour drive so if work has to be done it will mean an overnight stay. Then we will have the knock on to second homes, caravans and the like - holiday resorts will love that.
  6. I agree but that does not change the facts that this an inward looking initiative that completely ignores, or so it seems, the bigger picture. I do not see HMG playing ball, at least not until lockdown starts to be eased generally. Perhaps that is the RYAs plan.
  7. Not in favour of this as it would be abused and would probably have to be extended to include second homes, caravans and the like. I cannot get to my boat and it would be great if the rules could be safely relaxed but that will not be the case. So not in favour and feel the RYA is being inward looking and driven solely by its members - not surprisingly.
  8. Yes, I too applaud the honesty but not the approach. It is yet another example of the lockdown rules being broken/manipulated and I really am against that sort of thing. The more people that break the curfew the more likely we are to not to get an easing; indeed exactly the opposite might materialise. Such an action encourages others who take the view if it is good enough for one....... I am not allowed to visit my boat. May be I should adopt a similar approach! But I won't.
  9. I can see that angle and did think about it but gave benefit of doubt, mainly because being on a boat probably makes it easier to maintain the distancing. But can't argue with your view re timing. Would have been better to have moved out at the start when we were on the steep (steeper) upward curve.
  10. That makes your plan perfectly reasonable and essential to me then, manicpb. Go for it.
  11. Is there a requirement to move out from you existing home then? I was not aware that family groups had to be split up if already under the same roof. There is a rule that says you cannot relocate to a second home though. Personally I would have thought you would have been more use to your parents by being close at hand.
  12. That is exactly the same situation as the young lass next door to me has found herself in. In the OPs case, my understanding is if the boat is not his home, as in main residence, then moving it is out of the question if rules are to be followed. Some marinas have in fact closed and holiday boaters told to stay away (or go home and stay away) until restrictions are lifted. Not even casual visits are allowed. It is all part of the: "you cannot visit a second home. It is not classed as essential travel". I would be surprised if the current marina was not being sympathetic.
  13. Have used Aquasteel for the last three years now with no issues. Re water running through the bilge - this is what we had on our first boat (a Springer). We had a self draining deck welded in the front to stop it. A cratch cover is fine but it is not always closed and can suffer damage.
  14. Thank you for bringing me down to earth, Tree Monkey. Isolation is not helping me think clearly! You are of course correct, one should not be fooled by one negative post. It is the bigger picture that counts.
  15. Oh dear, I was planning on using this company to install a couple of window to porthole conversion panels. Now I am undecided!
  16. Scum taking advantage of the lock down no doubt? They know nobody is around on the boats.
  17. That is what I had heard, but there we go!. Decision now pretty much made - Crick or failing that North Kilworth.
  18. Absolutely. Am in the same situation, cottage in a small Suffolk village (well hamlet really) surrounded by farmland. Thay can keep their flats (even houses) in London - even if in Chelsea.
  19. Being a leisure boater, it makes not a lot of difference to me whether the marina is open or closed as driving there is not an essential journey.
  20. The residential boats are still at Crick I understand and quite rightly so for Crick has had residential moorings for years. It is the same at my current marina: live-aboards only, leisure boaters cannot even visit their boats.
  21. Any English experts about? I read it as Marina has no slipway and basic facilities........ Probably misread what you were saying - sorry ? When I asked they were pretty much the same as Crick for non-resi. All a bit in the air now as I cannot go to my boat to move it (it is a non-essential journey and my current marina is closed anyway as is Crick). ?
  22. Crick has a covered dry dock. Has done so for years - have had my boat blacked in it on a couple of occasions.
  23. I most certainly did not say that in my first post and there is another marina/yard on the Middle Level. I did say it, as a reason why standards might differ, it in response to a helpful comment from Alan de Enfield . I also said I would email them. Following that I did report that Fox's were indeed monitoring the boats and gave them kudos for it. That post went out within four hours of the post mentioning Middle Level. You are making this all sound like an affront to an excellent business when it was no more than an insurance related query. Please stop it.
  24. No problem - yes it is solved. I was unaware of what they were doing as I was left off an email list. I purposely refrained from mentioning the marinas name at the outset. I mentioned them when I heard they were looking after us as that was good press, which they deserve.
  25. Well if that is the case I unreservedly apologise for a) I can honestly say I have never witnessed it and b) others have said the same. Either way, I was left off an email list and had that was unfortunate oversight. I also never mentioned Fox's name in the original post and only brought them into it when I had the confirmation that they were looking after things. I also have had an association with Fox's that goes back to Charlie's day and have the highest regard for the business. My concern was insurance. Why is a mountain being made of what was a genuine concern in troubled times.
