  1. Well yes, the broker told us they wouldn’t allow a sale to go through if any BSS failures were unearthed and I just assumed that was the case with all brokers rather than an individuals choice. Having only ever bought privately before it was my first dealing with a broker.
  2. People mistakenly believe that buying from a broker gives some warranty protection. It doesn’t. The broker is simply selling a boat on the buyers behalf and any arising issues after purchase are between the vendor and new owner. As far as I’m aware a broker won’t or can’t sell a boat that doesn’t comply with BSS regulations and any failures that are highlighted in a pre purchase survey are the responsibility of the vendor to put right. At least that was the case that last time we purchased through a broker.
  3. I’m trying to find a threaded brass eye/ring to which I can attach the end of a chimney chain. Despite numerous t’interweb searches I can’t find anything suitable. All the ones I’ve found are less decorative and more bulky industrial looking than the type I’ve seen on many historic boats. Any suggestions or anyone prepared to sell me one?
  4. Thought I’d post an update about my smartgauge issues. I’ve changed the settings on the Victron multiplus via the Dip switches. Adaptive charging has been turned off and fixed mode selected. The charge voltage options suitable for my Victron deep cycle AGMs are 14.4v absorption or 14.7. I’ve set it to 14.7v. so this morning SG was showing batteries at 71%. On starting the built in generator the charge was 14.7v and 55amps. After 2.5 hours SG was showing 100% and the charge was 14.7v 9amps current. so in short the SG wasn’t faulty at all. Quite the opposite, I wasn’t understanding the warning signs it was giving. It was a simple case of the multiplus combi factory settings being incorrect for the batteries and our off grid scenario.
  5. I’ve read and re-read the manual so I’m now confident enough to change the settings. However I’m slightly unsure of which absorption voltage to set it to. Basically there are 2 options suitable for Victron deep cycle AGM 14.4v or 14.7v. I’m inclined to set it to 14.7v giving a faster charge given that I’m off grid and using a generator. Am I correct in my thoughts?
  6. All makes perfect sense. I’ve had a good read of the manual and I think I’ve got my head around changing the settings. I’ll probably have a go at the weekend when I’ve got plenty time to approach it slowly and methodically. Thankfully I’ve detected somethings wrong early. Many thanks for yours and others help.
  7. That makes sense. What you’re describing there seems to match what’s happening and given that we only ever charge via the generator or alternator then disabling the float mode may be the answer. FYI I had the generator and charger on for just over 2 hours this morning before I had to leave for work and these are the charge rate changes. Start. 14.40v 55amps SG 80% Abs 45 mins 13.80v 15 Amps SG 84% fl 60 mins 13.80v 10 amps SG 85% 75 mins 13.25v 3.10 amps SG 86%
  8. i hope not. Brand new batteries fitted a month ago. The SG was behaving the same with the previous batteries which were also victron AGM. This morning the SG was reading 80% when i started the generator and switched on the charger. Normally i would let them discharge further than that but i wanted to check the charge figures while I'm around. the charger was only in bulk mode for a couple of mins if that, it then switched to absorption charging at 14.40v/55amps. After 45 mins 13.80v/15amps SG reading 85%. At 1 hour 13.80v/10amps, SG reading 85%
  9. we use a victron multiplus 3000w/120amp invertor/charger this is fed from a 9kva built in generator. Batteries are 3 x 220 amp victron AGM and we live aboard off grid. It seems that no matter how long i have the charger on SG never goes above 85%. This hasn't always been the case. when i first fitted the SG it used to go to 100% however in the last 12 months it has started to freeze at 85% regardless of how long the bartteries are on charge. Our charging regime hasn't changed and i'd say that on average we charge for 4-5 hours every day. Are you saying there's a fault with the charger? what charge voltage and current readings would be normal?
  10. My experience of SG is mixed. I fitted one on a previous boat and all seemed fine. When we bought our current boat it came with a BMV600 so I fitted a SG to run alongside it. All was fine but then it started to freeze during charging at around 85%. Not too big a deal as I tend to use the BMV charge current as a charging guide. I recently fitted a set of replacement batteries and the SG is still freezing at around 85%. There’s also 300w solar fitted with a MPPT controller. So my regime now is I charge the batteries until the charge current on the BMV below 5 amps and voltage is a steady 13.20 volts which is the float charge voltage according to Victron website for the AGM batteries. At this point I manually reset the SG to 99% because it will be frozen at 85% and then use it as a guide as to when I should recharge again.
  11. It’s not unfenced. I just climbed over it off my boat, it’s only waist high.
  12. Woodhouse drive runs parallel with woodhouse Lane. Follow woodhouse drive in a NW direction from the junction with Scot lane until it meets Wigan lower road. Turn left onto wood house lane which runs right alongside the canal. I know this because I drove the low loader in there myself.
  13. There are several sources for parts. http://gardnerspares.com/ https://www.marinepowerservices.co.uk/ http://www.gardnerdiesel.co.uk/index.html
  14. No it isn’t. Access is off woodhouse drive. Pan out the map and all will be revealed
  15. Here. I’ve had 2 boats lifted in/out here. One 30ft butty by hiab and a 50ft narrowboat by crane. I also know someone who has had a wide beam lifted in at the same location. Dropped pin near Woodhouse Ln, Wigan WN6 https://goo.gl/maps/i1UrvQeVmLS2
  16. We usually park in the 2 for £10 pub car park in our van and kip there.
  17. They came separately. I’m no expert but I’m fairly confident that they are genuine.
  18. Yes I have one to sell plus a few spare links.
  19. What would the going rate be for a genuine WW2 9/10 link chimney chain?
  20. Converted Bantock https://www.apolloduck.com/boat.phtml?id=537198
  21. We have a heritage range on our boat which runs on red diesel. We’ve lived aboard this particular boat for 4 years and it’s worked perfectly providing heating, cooking and hot water. We have it serviced every 12 months.
